Yes, but I just simply don't buy that "geek" statement. There's little to support that claim. What makes buying UMD movies more "geek" than not, other than you just made that up :?

Because non geeks buy DVDs where they can watch it on a tv or in a portable DVD player. ;)

You are pretty hardcore I can not see buying media 2x I guess I am cheap. I just can't see spending 20 bucks on a new release DVD then spending an aditional 15 bucks to watch it my PSP. The only way I would use the PSP for video playback is with a memory stick.
I wouldn't buy them 2x either, the examples are of films I did not buy in DVD, but for PSP they'd make more sense.
The fact that you don't need to sit in your livingroom, planning and possibly scheduling the time ahead to watch a movie on your home theater setup is a big plus for PSP and UMD's for me.
Movies that I didn't think were quite worth buying and dedicating time on DVD, I now consider buying on UMD for less time and place restricted watching.
That might sound odd, and maybe it's just the novelty value affecting me, but at least at the moment I see myself as a potentional UMD movie buyer. And I am pretty sure the way I feel about it is quite the average stance people have on PSP and UMD's.

Have the portable DVD players sold well at all? My impression is that people consider them just that little too big to be as convenient to bring along.

Portable DVD players are very popular especially with travelers.

Novelty wears off pretty quickly...
Well, with the PSP it has lasted considerably longer than with most other (any?) devices I've bought, I've had it for a month already and I've not noticed much wear off ;)
As watching video on the go is not dependant solely on the device, and I've already found it to be a great and liberating alternative for livingroom viewing, I don't think after the novelty of the device wears off I would not still be watching movies on PSP.

I disagree, but I don't have any factual data to support, just my own observations.

Oh you'll still be watching them because you already purchased them, question is will you still be buying them. ;)

I would not be watching the same films very many times, if I watch a film more than two times it has to be very very good or I re-watch them with friends.
Don't tell me what I'll be watching, I knows me better than you does ;)

Why wouldn't I?
I would.
I still buy DVD's too, even though the novelty of surround sound and big screen have worn off long time ago.

Thanks PC-Engine for taking this used to be good thread and riping it to shreads.

No thank you for attempting to create a thread for each and every news piece on PSP. I'm glad the mods quickly put an end to that.

Good luck with that PSP cellphone attachment.

Obviously the #s prove so far that UMD could be viable despite the longing of certain individuals.

Will it continue? I don't know, it could easily stall if the PSP doesn't sell through well enough or consumers just tire of it. Or it could do well. /shrug.

And I find it funny that some would resort to calling those that buy UMDs as geeks when they are also talking in other threads about building HTPCs for $400 with an all aluminium case, remote, and HD-DVD drive.
