BioShock

If you read between the lines, I think he did. 2.5 but it's so hacked up it hardly resembles the original engine.

edit- I just noticed this guy is an artist, what does he know??

Well, if he is doing PR work and is an artist on the team he probably is one of the leads. His answer is pretty detailed about their current dev process (without being specific) and he is a dev on their forums.

Anyhow, like you said, read between the lines. He totally ignored the point blank question and gave a PR answer. But that is ok, his answer is good: They have customized the UE rendering engine for their specific needs and don't feel they are lacking any graphical effects. The fact they have customized it to meet their own needs is a good sign in my book. Anyhow, hate to say I called it... but I called it ;) The screen shots still look very good.

Water is the main theme of the game and, as such, and as would really be expected, the water 'effects' in the game are simply stunning. The devs showing us the game spoke of 'depth layered fluid simulation' and 'real-time refraction and reflection' and we have to admit to not really understanding what they were going on about, until the character in the game walked into a flooded public toilet and we were mesmerised by the water effects. Not often you can say you were mesmerised by a flooded bog!

Indeed, there are both a dedicated artist and a programmer on the BioShock team who’s entire professional lives are dedicated to recreating water.

The version of the game we saw was running smooth-as-you-like on an Xbox 360 dev kit and it really struck SPOnG after the BioShock demo that developers have only been scratching the surface of what this hugely powerful machine is truly capable of.

BioShock is due sometime in 2007.

Amazing artwork, especially in the first screen. Anyone else get the feeling BioShock having a kind of 50ies feeling to it? Really retro...

The 40-50's art deco style is quite intentional. It's symbolic of the utopian ideals of the city and scientists who built it.

I like the art direction they've taken too. And the environments just look nice and crisp.

I think it has more to do with the fact that the complex was built in thes 50s.

And why did they choose to have it be built in the 50's? Because the wholesome, leave it to beaver feel of the 50's makes a great contrast to the death and decay of the crumbling society.

IMO, it is absolutly intentional. Even the mechanical suits are an hommage to the 50ies SciFi pulp novels. Moreover, look at the dead body. Its clothing is typical 50ies. E.g. his trouser are rolled up! Etc.

I suggest all of you install System Shock 2 and try it out. There are tricks out there to getting it to run in XP even though the devs left out NT support entirely.

You will be surprised just how far we've regressed over the years. FEAR, Prey, Doom3, Quake4, and so many others stole concepts from SS2 (and didn't use them very well at all.)

The atmosphere in this game is just awesome, not only does it look phenomenal it really pulls you in to this world...

I'd love to finally see some video of this game. People who have seen it talk about the atmosphere and you dont quite get it from these shots.

Going to be a new IGN Bioshock video tonight.

:)

Watched it.

Game looks really really clean and solid.
And of course the visuals are really just icing on the cake for these guys games (Irrational).

Game looked great. Only thing I didn't like is that the character seemed to move rather slow. Seemed pretty damn cool though.
