Best water rendering effects *spawn

why that picture looks worse than the videos... maybe because no compression artefacts so my brain cant fill the blanks?

Slightly spoilery (underwater shot very early in the game) just something i noticed and i'd like to ask. To start, refraction beneath the water surface works in this way (simplified but you get the point):

Uncharted 4 gameplay shot: http://abload.de/img/uncharted-4_-a-thiefsw6j6i.jpg
Crysis 3 underwater: http://abload.de/img/crysis304.30.2016-07.2wjwy.jpg http://abload.de/img/desktop04.30.2016-08.whkq3.jpg
RotTR underwater: http://abload.de/img/riseofthetombraider04ufjni.jpg http://abload.de/img/riseofthetombraider04jmjrd.jpg

Real life picture for comparison: http://il6.picdn.net/shutterstock/videos/6964600/thumb/1.jpg

Is there any other game that has realistic water refraction underneath the surface like Uncharted 4? I don't have all games to test and not every game allows you to go underwater that's why i'm asking :)

And now the image is on gaf, may it rest in peace (wondering how much it will take to get nuked) posting a cropped version (in case it gets nuked) for the water refraction only which is the part i'm interested in

And another image to explain how refraction works in this case, more simplified than the previous one

So, any other game doing this?

Ratchet & Clank this time (doen't seem to be doing anything like C3/RotTR): http://abload.de/img/ratchet_clank_20160439pkwi.png

Edit: Another three examples from Rise of the Tomb Raider

There's got to be some complex calculations going on with the refraction in UC4, sure explains why it looks so real in those gifs taken down.

Ah, found an answer. Expected, really! Like all other things in life the answer was: the original Crysis (it actually had light refraction beneath the water surface unlike Crysis 2/3), not as good looking as U4 but still really good (especially for its time)

Not sure if any other games this generation do that, can't remember off the top of my head. And disappointing that Crytek dropped it (or reduced the effect?) in the next Crysis games.

Oh MY, from gaf. Two more screens with water

Very very compressed but the water looks insane! Crysis would be proud.

WHAAAAAAT THEEEEEEEEE!!! If i have an HD Video capture device, i would like to record it, edit it into a nice loop. AND USE IT AS MY LIVE WALLPAPER :D :D

btw
When Crysis tend to depends on "real" visual tricks, ND tends to combine "real" and "fake" tricks, resulting in always awesome looking game for its time and hardware constrain.
You, naughty dogs! :D

Like I thought after the Madagaskar level was first showcased. The environment assets (like rocks) have no tesselation and a low poly Budget in my view. I also do not like the texture quality. The linear levels are graphically much better but I am not shure if there is any tesselation. In my opinion the landscape in Battlefront is much more detailed.

@ultragpu
I am not shure why you are not comparing it to the Uncharted series itself.
Crysis water looks still good. Especially when it is compared to what Naughty Dog could achieve at that time. I would bet that the Crysis water physics is still better . ;)

(PS4 remaster pictures)

With mods you can achieve a similar color appearance (Caribbean)

When you say anything about Crysis the religious groups will try to hunt you down and silence you, history repeats itself. Will people know the truth 200 years from now? I can already imagine the priests in nanosuits preaching about Crytek and the holy bible (game manual, graphics presentations) :D

Off the top of my head... the 3rd best selling video game ever (released in 2013 btw)... and definitely not the only other game doing fake caustics like UC4.

Yes UC4 has some really appalling low poly environment outdoors (something any other game would be trashed from btw) thankfully the awesome art direction definitely makes up for it while in movement.
And yes nothing comes close to Battlefront..nothing.

Haven't seen the gifs, but I imagine you can render the underwater to a render target and then sample this with an offset via water surface normal.
