BC Xbox games NOT getting AA'd?

Is there any way that the original Xbox games that do get software emulated in the Xbox360 not getting Anti-Aliased? The more I think of it, the more it just seems that all of the BC games played on the X360 will just look better than on the original, right?

That is, you can't force the game to bypass the eDRAM & AA........ :?:

Although they would all still be 480p instead of 720p, just cause that would require new textures.

Anyone can slap me around if I'm off base. :)

I don't think that would be a problem for most games, I think they wont be converted to 720p because it's widescreen, but going by emulators for older consoles on the pc, things like AA and resolution can be changed or enabled in the emulator. I think the bigger question would be does it have the power to emulate the games and force higher resolutions, since AA is "free" that might not be a problem

That brings up a good point: if the minimum requirement of the X360 is 720p, then wouldn't the older games have 720p as well (though, in 4:3 ratio, not 16:9, ending up in 960x720p)?

Also, can higher resolutions use lower resolution textures?

Textures resolutions is independent of screen/framebuffer resolution. In others words, yes.

why cant they use Xbox 360's hardware to just add tons of AA to Xbox games? I understand not increasing the resolution or changing the aspect ratio of the screen, but I would think that applying 6x AA to Xbox games would be fairly trivial.

And what about higher AF? ;)

Karma Police: Do you play PC games at all?

Heck yeah. I'm at a 50-50 split right now: PC/Xbox

But AF can be applied now in PC games with almost no performance hit at all (at least for the X800's/6800's), so AF for me is a forgone conclusion.

Vysez: thanks for the info.

So in theory, with good effort, MS could make the old Xbox games run with 720p, 4xAA, and 16xAF, although still at 4:3 ratio and with the old textures.

Sounds great to me! :D

Karma police . If you have an old game like quake 3 or half life . Run it at 640x480 or 720p (if you had a tv capable of that for your xbox games ) then run them at 720p with 4x fsaa and 8x aniso and that is the diffrence u will see with xbox games if they apply these features to them on x360

I was wondering because you seemed to think you needed higher res textures in order to increase the video resolution. ;)

It's not exactly a foregone conclusion that they'll use AF if they don't even talk about it.

I'm on top of the AA & AF situation fortunately, though it took alot of LAN parties & 10 years to figure it out for PC's. Textures/resolutions connection is new to me, but Vysez helped me out there, Thx!

I do have a new 34" Sony 16:10 HDTV. Thats what my Xbox is linked to. The jump from 480i to 480p was huge, although the aliasing was more pronounced, especially in the newer games like Jade Empire & ROTK.

The potential of playing those old game at 720p w/ AA & AF really is getting me going.......

You may be right about the AF. But having played Halo PC at high resolution with no AF, then forcing even just 4xAF with Omega drivers, it really made a large difference in the visual quality.

I only think that no one has mentioned AF just because it's not the graphics hog it used to be. Between AA & AF, only AA really impacts fps nowadays, at least for PC's.

I was never arguing about the visual impact. ;)

I think it is important for them to mention AF for exactly the impact to visual quality that you've mentioned.

Well, they haven't really talked about BC at all yet, except to confirm that they're working on it, and that it's a software solution. I'd imagine that they're still working primarily on getting it to _work_, not making it look pretty ;)

I think for Halo1,2 it could be hard as as atleast the PC-version didnt work with AA. This was on Halo1 but it maybe holds true to Halo2 aswell, wait for the PC-port t know more. BC is a little up in the "air" of my knowledge on X360.

Ain't it the truth. I wish more people got to play in 480p on the current generation, they really don't know what they are missing. (Of course this doesn't apply to the B3D crowd.)
