PS4 vs PC

They're saying that it's almost impossible to see a difference between PS4 and PC version. They compared it to BF4 running on a high-end PC with a "pretty expensive Radeon card". They're also expecting that if you're an owner of a PC that costs less than 1000€ then it will look worse than on PS4 if you want to target 60fps. 60fps is almost perfectly available in PS4 version. Given the low price of the PS4, they say that this definitely speaks for the console and against the PC version. In this video the PS4 version looks brighter due to the recording that they're using. There are some effects like water drops on the windscreen that are missing in the PC version even though they are available for PS4. Shadows, level of detail, etc is indistinguishable. Game runs smoothly even in "bombastic scenes"

Yep, they've spotted that the PS4 version is 900p (without actually knowing, just going by their PC experience - PC is rather popular in Germany ;) ), but otherwise they feel the PS4 version keeps 60fps very well and looks the same or sometimes better than the PC version. They also say that while you see a brightness difference in this video, that's purely due to the different capturing hardware they've used. On the same screen, the game looks the same both PC and PS4 output wise. They also point to some minor differences that probably just have to do with the early versions they have (their words) like water drops not showing up on the broken windscreen in the PC version vs the PS4 version.

And they do indeed say that you'll probably need 1000+ euro PC to run the game with a similar framerate and graphical details as the PC, so they are considering the 399 PS4 very good value. Of course, the PC price may drop a few hundred Euro once we get the Mantle version of Battlefield 4 ;)

I don't know what muppet came up with those conclusions but considering you can put a PC together for well under 1000 Euro's containing GTX 780 at the new prices then that's clearly a gross exageration. With no performance figures to back up the claims it's pure hyperbole.

DF claim the PS4 version comes in around the PC version on High settings and it's clear from the PS4 vs PC comparison video (on Ultra) that besides the superior image quality (which is quite stark in the power lines scene) you have more vegetation, more particles and greater draw distance on the PC version - not in hugely noticable amounts but it's present and visible in the videos.

Now if they can show through benchmarking that no GPU below a 780 can average over 60fps in this game at high settings, 900p and FSAA then I'll believe them. But good luck to them on that.

All I see is steeply diminishing returns beyond the PS4 version, at least for BF4.

Why not the XBO version? The gap between it and the PS4 is smaller than that between the PS4 and the PC. And on what basis do you define diminishing returns?

Say a GPU with 20% more performance than the PS4 allows you to run at the same settings/framerate but with high quality MSAA instead of the slightely blurry FSAA?

Or what if the same GPU plays at exactly the same graphics settings but allows you to stay locked at 60fps in multiplayer rather than dipping into the 40fps range (along with it's associated tearing)?

Seems to me the claim of diminishing returns is completely arbitrary based on ones preferred platform. I'm sure a far stronger argument could be made that the steeply diminishing returns start after the Xbox 360 with neither next gen console offering anything like the visuals to justify their increased performance.

I think the Xbox One and PS4 versions look very similar. I'm getting an Xbox One for a number of reasons and the visuals appear good enough to me. The PC version does not seem to be worth the investment to me, for this particular title. Bang for buck is probably PS4, just looking at the graphics. Maybe you're right about being able to build a cheap and competitive PC, but I'm not sure there's anything that would give me enough of a boost to make it worth spending more than the $400 I'd have to spend on the PS4. You are right about framerate in multiplayer. In that case, PC can have a clear advantage. Just depends what it costs. It didn't look to me like the PS4 version ever became really unplayable. 60Hz locked would be very nice and is more of a concern to me than any kind image quality improvement.

Now, other titles may be a totally different story.

IMO, for a fast paced shooter like BF4 you need good fps for reactions and good resolution to make out enemies in the distance. Both of which the PS4 version is at the front of the console pack. There also doesn't seem to be much of a reduction in the eye candy with the MP portion on the PS4. I don't see the reason, based on BF4, for spending an extra 100 ($£) for a reduced experience.

Don't get me wrong, the consoles will still offer better bang for buck if you're going for a new build. But then it depends what you're already running. To play this game on PS4 over PC in my case would cost me around $420 for an almost certainly lesser experience.

Sure, if you already have a good PC that can provide a better experience with or without a small upgrade, then why would you get a console for this game. Only reason I can think of is where you friends will be playing, which to be honest is the most important part of my decision making. Wouldn't be particularly fun to play alone on PS4 or PC when all my friends will be playing on Xbox One. If they told me they were all getting it for Wii U (is it even on Wii U?), that might be a different story ;)

Some of my friends are talking about getting this on the 360. Does anyone know if EA/DICE has plans to let 360 owners transition to the Bone when they get around to buying one?

I believe gamestop had a deal to trade in your 360 copy and get it for the one for $10.

I thought that was for all retailers since it was/is a publisher cross-sell promotion plan.

Don't worry, I'm not.

On topic, Jack Frags impressions:

Still feels PS4 MP > Xbone SP. He must be more sensitive to resolution.. makes sense given he's a high level player.

Finally got a chance to check out SP video on XBO and apart from the jaggies the game looks amazing! I thought I was gonna see a major downgrade after hearing about 720p resolution and whatnot but man call me shocked. I'm perfectly happy with this level of graphics from this game. It looks almost identical to the E3 PC showing....kudos to the guys at EA.

For comparison

I still don't get PS4's social features. Will BF4 support spectating out of the box ? in SP or MP ? Will it support remote assistance somehow ?
