Well this doesn't looke that good but I'm not really worried given that it's pre-alpha and MP mode. Still, I wonder if the final game will at least feature POM on the walls (cause white shiny tiles in the metro look butt ugly up close).

I don't like the lighting. The contrast between light and dark is too high, and there doesn't seem to be eye adaptation to balance it :/
Same thoughts here, maybe the final product will look better, its just an alpha trial. Or maybe MP will have a simpler lighting model
Back to Karkand will be the first DLC but will not be free or day 1. Pre-ordering BF3 does not get you early access to the maps, it just means you don't pay for that particular DLC.

I don't like the trend either, I found that the couple of map packs I bought for BF2 went largely unplayed, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play an updated Sharqui Peninsula or Strike at Karkand. I just hope they aren't too boldly re-imagined.
BF3 shouldn't suffer too much with this particular DLC. So many people will be playing that the community should be able to support the haves and have-nots easily. To be fair I got so much playtime out of BF2 that giving them some extra cash for some maps I barely played doesn't hold any regrets for me.
Ideally though, I would have liked to see these retro maps included in the main game and used to market it that way, but I think what they're doing is very canny in a business sense. It's no wonder that the pre-orders are doing so well.

I agree with you that BF2 gave me tremendous value however, this is just going to split the community. Even if there are enough people on both sides, inevitably your party of friends will be divided.
Even though I dislike pre-order hooks I think I'd prefer them for MP games where eventually they are made free. MP Maps as DLC trades income for fun. The customer is basically paying to get a reduced server/player domain.
Maybe they could have free weekends or whatever so that the pr0-l33t types can practice during the week (and skip school) but your party of friends can still play together on weekends?
It's not an easy problem to solve, but I wish DLC wasn't the solution for BF3.
P.S. For those thinking "just pre-order it then", in some countries pre-ordering either isn't possible or may not even give you access to these pre-order hooks. Some countries still use pre-order as it was originally intended: you walk into the store on release date and you have a guaranteed copy.
Nowadays pre-orders just mean advanced sales so obviously companies try to get as big a volume as possible, even if that means cutting content from the main game.
By my understanding Back to Karkand will be sold "later" (might not be available for purchase day 1), weapons will be given away for a free "later".
BF2 was DX9c only and BF3 is DX10+ only. I have to wonder if this is timed purposefully by DICE, as in, don't make the next gen game until the next gen of cards are in good number - so we don't have to spend too much manpower supporting the low end?
They seemed to get it right with BF2. I remember enough people needing to upgrade their rigs to cause a bit of a stir in forums, but not enough to actually hurt sales (it seemed). Lots of people appeared to be ready to upgrade for this game.
Is it the same story now? Or are there significantly more people (proportionally) with DX10 level hardware already? Will they have an easier time selling the minimum requirement of DX10 than they did last time?
