Battlefield 3 announced

Looks like crap, to be honest.. I played BC2 for the first time the other day, and I think that looked better than this (and not running at 500fps, either). Certainly doesn't look much like what we've been shown so far in official releases.

I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of non-interactive benchmark released, now that I think about it. How many companies actually do things like that, so you can really tell beforehand how well your system will run a game? While my current system meets minimum spec, I'll have upgraded by the time this game's released, and I'll meet the (speculated) recommended spec.

I wouldn't read much into it. Everything we've seen from the game has been gorgeous, and then this comes along looking like Battlefield 2. There is a turd in the punch bowl.

It looks like they were playing on super low settings or something. Or going out of their way to take ugly screenshots. Or maybe console version :D

Its confirmed that they are from ultra/very low settings.

BC 2 on low looks much uglier and definitely dont run at 500 fps, nice optimizations.

Indeed, it's silly to come to any conclusions about the games graphics from those shots but if the game can run at 500fps on a 460 then that's damn impressive. It should be able to run on most decent IGP's too.

Of course we don't really know anything. There could be huge amounts missing from that code which will be present in the final version even at the lowerst settings.

Right after the post about BF3 probably not going to be available on Steam the discussion moved to EA vs Steam, Retail vs DD, the usefullness (or not) of optical drives and even price differences in different parts of the world! Moved the posts here.

Let's use this thread to admire the "AMAZING IQ" shots.

Not bad considering its alpha. But i'd hope some stuff would'v been better. The lighting for starters wich previously in bf bc1&2 a let down seems to not have changed much(unlike the trailer and technical papers) The screenshot with the shock paddles and the one with the m4/16 for example, they'r pitch black, in a mid day or so sunny day... the lighting of some objects feel out of place completly, they'r too dark. As if GI is off, there doesn't seem to be ambient lighting at all. Maybe its "fixed" in the final product. Unless those were taken with low settings considering the fps count and some details... wouldn't suprise if that's the case.
One thing i liked though was the ground edge that meets the lake, its smooth curve, no sharp corners, nice ground tesselation :)

And what's that on the background? the Eiffel tower?

It is super low quality mode. Unless you think a GTX460 can run the game at 500fps (well actually it can... on super low quality mode).

I don't even know what BC2 looks like at low settings.. now that I think about, I set up my games the exact opposite.. max out everything, then if it's unplayable, start turning things down one by one until it's smooth. BC2 is great out of the box, so I left everything at max. :)

Those pics remind me of the first time I (accidentally) jump started an enemy with the shock paddles. I was trying to revive a teammate in BF2 when an enemy a-hole came around the corner. I spazed out and electrocuted him. LOL! I didn't even know that was possible.

God damn BF rawks!

Lol! There is no greater humiliation that 50,000 volts to the chest!

well, other than playing BF3 on a console :D

Well, to be fair, BC2 was pretty good on console, at least as far as console versions of BF go.

Nevertheless, I played BF2 on PC and have very fond memories of that whole experience, so I sort of feel like I should get BF3 for PC. I'll likely get it for both 360 and PC. I have a feeling there will be a pretty active B3D crew to play with on PC, which is cool because I'll finally get a chance to shoot Silent Bhudda. :p

Not only do the cool people play on PC, but the gap between console and PC in BF3 will be much larger than BC2. It's not just higher texture resolution and AA on PC this time - the renderer is fundamentally more efficient in DX11. That plus more players, dedicated servers, etc. make it a pretty obvious choice IMHO :)

Apparently, a closed Alpha trial has begun. And in case anyone didn't know, BF3 will not support DX9.

There's some sort of Alpha website associated with that link, but it's a dead end. Entering in your information leads nowhere.

By the way, for any Dice devs potentially reading this (repi), I henceforth recommend myself as an Alpha tester. My input is vital to the production of Battlefield 3 :)

Plus, I'm awesome.

And really strong.
