Reading those documents destroys the narrative. Dumpster diving in pastebin nonsense and console warrior twitter ramblings are their safe-space.

The 4Pro was a frankenstein GPU, it was 2 of the PS4 GPUs with minor additional instructions added.

Nothing of that speaks to software advancements in virtualization or abstraction layers for the hardware, which is what was mentioned. So it seems Sony leans on hardware compatibility while MS leans on software.

Minor Additional Instructions, mostly surrounding 16-bit math instructions with conversion to and from, and some gradients:
    • Scalar ALU Operations
      • 16-bit Pack Operations
    • Vector ALU Operations
      • 16-bit Floating Point Operations: Arithmetic, Packed Arithmetic, Comparison, Field Access, Rounding, Transcendental
      • 16-bit Integer Operations: Arithmetic, Packed Arithmetic, Comparison, Shift, Packed Shift
      • 32-bit Bitwise Logical, Shift, Rotate, Bitfield
    • Scalar Memory Operations
      • Real-time Global Timestamp Read Operation
    • Vector Memory Operations
      • Buffer Access with Format Conversion
      • Image Access without Sampling
      • Image Access with Sampling

Yeah these regression tests for Oberon BC1 and BC2 are really extensive when it comes every GPU HW feature. Sony's solution for PS5 is tied to the hardware.

My point was never that PS5 wouldn't have BC... but that PS5 hardware choices aren't solely wrapped around it.

It is. I'm really not in the mood on posting certain statements of such BS as evidence.

Not solely, no-one said that, but it has been in their design from the beginning one can imagine.

There's a misunderstanding about what a hypervisor and hal can and cannot do.

MS also have to design the hardware based on BC goals. They cannot just put an nvidia and ARM in there.

Unveiling is probably next month, we'll get more answers and less crazy rumors.

There is the Sony CES thang on 2020-01-06.

And someone on ResetEra mentioned a February 2020 reveal, but can't recall exact details.

  9. No way it is revealed at CES. Sony will have a separate event for their most important consumer product.

Yep. The Xbox BC team really delivered for MS this generation and the next. They're better setup for the future because of the BC teams work.

No I was just going by the history of Sony unveiling in february, with price at E3, for a holiday launch.

So a wild guess, not a confirmation it's about PS5.

I think it was Klee that said Feb 2020 over at Era. So if you trust his hardware info you could trust his event timeline info too.

Which is nothing. Feb is a guess, a good guess perhaps as it fits the timeline.

It's a guess based on the PS4 reveal, which happened in February 2013.
