Official figures yet to confirm, but handheld roll-out looks strong down under

The new Nintendo DS handheld has had the most successful hardware launch ever in the Australian market, where it launched last Thursday ahead of its planned European roll-out on Friday, March 11th.

"The retail and consumer feedback from Thursday's Nintendo DS launch has been astounding," according to Nintendo Australia's sales and marketing director Rose Lappin. "We are eagerly awaiting the official market sales figures this week to fully solidify our place in the Australian marketplace as the most successful current hardware launch ever."

Official figures for the launch are expected to be revealed on Wednesday by market research firm GfK, with Nintendo's current claim - that sales in the first 12 hours have been the highest ever for a new hardware platform in the region - based entirely on retailer feedback.

The DS launches in Europe on March 11th, priced at UKP 99 / 149 Euro, the last major territory to receive the hardware after hugely successful launches in Japan and North America before Christmas.

The platform is already a huge success despite strong market anticipation for Sony's PlayStation Portable - whose European launch was recently pushed back indefinitely due to stock shortages.

That doesn't change the fact that the marketplace is small and almost unimportant...
 
What a completely ignorant thing to say! There's no such thing as an unimportant market. If you can sell something to someone and make money out of it, of course it's important. Ever more so if you can sell something to a percentually large section of the populace and make even more money from doing so!

Nobody's ignoring the Swedish market for example despite it's only a fraction of Australia's in size. You're talking complete bollocks here. The PS may have sold some 110-ish million over the years, but there's over six billion people on the planet. I bet you're not impressed by that sales ratio... :rolleyes:

Actually, they pretty much do. Why do you think "Europe" always comes bundled together? ;) Extra details (such as performance in more recognizable markets like England and perhaps Germany or France) get tossed on top, but people are mainly concerned with Europe as a whole, or the UK in particular as it's the easiest US/Euro comparison to understand. Kind of the same way "North American" sales refers to everyone as US sales, shrugging those other NA residents aside.

Speaking of which, ELSPA only covers UK sales, I don't think there's an agency that keeps track of all the European sales data...

Sometimes companies even use the term 'Europe' for the entire PAL market btw. ;)

The companies themselves usually announce their European totals...

That is, when they're not picking individual markets to show themselves in the best light. ;)

No, the launch of the russian spacerocket carrying monkeys a few decades ago was more successful. It didnt suck at all, to the contrary, it spitted out a lot of hot stuff.

Nobody is ignoring the Swedish market? Please show me a person outside of Sweden who gives a damn about it. It's lumped together with the rest or Europe. As I said, Australia is about as important as Ohio. Austrians market is less important then Dutch market. I could go on and on. The point is, it’s nice that it is doing well in Australia (we don’t even know how well in absolute terms), but unless every single person there buys 10 DSs and 30 games, it has little global relevance.

Um, on second thought, I've changed my opinion to match yours. So has Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple, IBM, Ford, Mercedes, Colgate Palmolive, Nestlé, Pfizer, etc etc, and they've all decided to close up shop over here and stop selling all their products to us. Nobody cares about us, this country's just too small.

There's no Swedish market place; there's only the EU single market and Sweden is part of that. In fact, studies show that after joining the EU (10 years ago) product diversity has dramatically increased in each of the former "new" member states.
 
MS takes Australia very seriously; I believe its their most successful market for Xbox out of anywhere in the world.

There's a little bit of in game footage in their as well (only a few seconds though). It looks a lot better then either Ridge Racer DS or Asphalt Urban GT IMO. Polygon counts look a lot higher (especially the car models). The polygons also look very solid (perspective correction) and I don't see any scenery pop up either.
