ATi vs. nVidia

Our DX9 demoes should work on any fully supported PS2.0 HW with DX9 drivers. There's no "test" for non ATI HW.

The question was whether NV demos would run on ATi hardware though... I'm glad you guys don't segregate your demos though.

Need to read before posting  !

Nah, responses are always more amusing if the poster just guessed at what the thread was about. j/k... but it would make for some interesting discussions, would it not? :)

Nvidia sets their demos to check for an Nvidia card, so they won't run even if your hardware could run them. I couldn't run the stupid PlanetView or whatever on my R8500 because it said "No Nvidia card, you suck!"
If the demo would run otherwise ( DX or OGL not using vendor-extensions) these checks should be easy to remove. After i got my GF3 a while back, i digged up the the old MatroxG400 EMBM demo ( you know the one in woods, with fairies flying around ) and patched out exactly one byte in the .exe ( it basically had a DX renderer string check in there, not DX caps check )
Ran beautifully after that (tho menu texts were somewhat corrupted ).
edit:typos

Yea, DX demos can be patched to run on any card providing it supports that level of DX.

Nvidias gf4 demos were all opengl and used NV extensions though and so didn't run on ati hardware.

It was for the gf3 although the actual demo wasn't released until about 6 months after. I assume that one was d3d as it ran on my 8500.

i seem to remember in the 9700 launch they spoke about being able to double(or something) the 4600's performance on chameleonmark.. thought that was quite amusing at the time ;D

beyond the demos being made hardware specific, is there anything in the nvidia demo(s) that the 9700 couldn't physically do? (ie - shader ops, etc)
