And yet for all that, 8500 MAXX still makes no sense; in light of upcoming R300 I see no point in that card. To draw a historical parallel, it would be an equivalent of 3dfx releasing an Obsidian X24-stile twin Voodoo2 card alongside Voodoo3.

I can confidently say that the MAXX rumour is 100% fake

i believe its fake , the only way it would be real is if they are planing a dual chip for the r300 and they are testing drivers and the agp bridge using the current r200s to get the kinks out .
