ATi CCC Color Profiles

I was wondering if there is a utility (automatic) to force the graphics drivers (8.12) to not default to basic color settings when launching a 3D/2D application?

So far the solution I have made is to make a profile with the color settings and binded them to a hotkey. So when I launch an application I just press the hotkey to get back color settings. These color settings are vital to get good colors and blacks with my new LCD.

Thanks.

This is a very old problem, I had that with my Radeon 9800 & 15" CRT.
A shortcut bound profile seems like about as good as it gets.
Fortunately it hasn't been an issue with my later monitors.

Interesting I could sworn past CCC options allowed adjusting both 2d color profiles as well as 3d color profiles. But I'm not seeing that in 8.12.

The problem is that coming out of games etc, the drivers reload the default profile rather than the last profile.
I seem to recall ATI saying that it was somehow an XP problem or something?

Oh, ooh I just realised he's saying that it is happening while running a program
My problem was that after closing the 3D application it would reset back to default but it would keep the existing profile while running the application.

I have a question for you then, does ATI allow gamma correction with increments of 0.01? 3dfx did it for me but nvidia doesn't.
I've been running nvidia, which doesn't have those nonsensical profile problems.

Nvidia (well, geforce 6/7) allows gamma increments of 0.01 below gamma 1, but only 0.1 or 0.15/0.16 increments above gamma 1 (if you know what I mean), this drives me slightly nut because I can't both force higher gamma in some older games (counterstrike) and correct the amount of green on my CRT monitor.

so, for desktop I have gamma R/G/B : 1.00/0.97/1.00 ; for counterstrike I have 1.16/1.16/1.16 (and, the higher the gamma, the more exacerbate green is)

but your issue is more annoying than that one.

Oh wow, thats another thing ATI has changed. You used to be able to do it both ways in increments of 0.01. But it appears in the new catalysts you're limited to increments of +/- 0.05 above or below 1.00. Haven't messed with gamma in ages so only just now noticed this when I went to go check for you.

The ATI CCC only allows for RGB 0.05 step increments above or under 1.00.

I should add that it also happens when entering or exiting games. The color profile gets disabled and I need to re-enable it clicking on the 'Reactivate ATI color panels' button.

Also does the ATI drivers set the output color range to full RGB or is it limited RGB. My LCD is connected with a DVI cable and there is no options or info visible about RGB mode used. The thing I could do without the ATI color adjustments but I would like the blacks a bit more pronounced with less white.

It is also for 3D applications. The programs where some selective ones, everything under Vista x64.

I did some search on the net and found some users having luck with PowerStrip. Tested it and bought it later for 20$ which is kinda OK for what it does as I have no other alternatives. You can create custom color profiles and even have them executed when target program runs.

All games (except Crysis and Warhead) now work with the custom color settings and gamma and when exiting the games the profile is still active. Crysis and Warhead has it's own gamma/brightness/contrast control so I can just replicate the custom settings. Satisfying solution but one that ATI should have provided!

Doesn't ATI Tray Tools do this stuff?

I have a profile set up in ATT to manipulate colour/contrast/brightness/gamma, with a hotkey bound to load the profile as some games, either on starting, or exiting, cause the profile to be lost.

ha! nice try but I guess you are limited by your display's black levels. can you have a VGA connection?, here you are most probably guaranteed to get the full RGB range.

I can achieve better blacks with gamma tweak and reduce whites. But thought maybe I could do this in another way!

My monitor does have VGA and DVI connection. Though why would the VGA connection be better than the DVI?

you sound like you worry about getting 16-235 RGB (or whatever) instead of full 0-255 RGB; I'm pretty sure you'll get 0-255 on the VGA, at least the output is a bit different (going through the RAMDAC with VGA, through TMDS with DVI), there's no wrong trying it.
There would be weird VGA signal tweaking to do with powerstrip probably.

lastly the VGA connection is not always worse than DVI. but I don't fscking now if it will be useful to you :)

ahh,
you cant adjust gamma over 1.0 (you can for video overlay)
but would you need to

edit: looks like on nv the higher the number the lower the gamma
eg: 0.01 is very bright while 1.00 is very dark
