anymore insight as to what Nvidia G70 and G80 actually are?

I keep thinking G70 is NV47 and G80 is NV48, however incorrect this might be.

maybe G70 is NV48 and G80 is dual core NV48 ?

I do *not* believe that either G70 or G80 is actually a true next-generation Nvidia architecture, NV5X, which is also being used as the basis for PS3 GPU.

Hasn't it been explained enough times by now making GPUs "dual core" is more than a little pointless as the parts of them that are actually suited to being "dual core'd" already ARE, since many a year in fact...

Doesn't make much sense from an architectural POV, but I would imagine it can improve (effective) yields for large dice since you can pick'n'mix prior to packaging.

I think G70 and G80 are NV5x/NV6x replacements (maybe G80 is simply a new name for something that was already roadmapped). NV48 sounds like 0.11u NV45 with native PCIe - like a 16-pipe NV42, I guess.

Edit - I guess G70 could be the NV5x replacement and G80 could be a refresh. That would make sense if R580 is roadmapped as more than just a simple clock bump.

ahh, so Mufu you disagree with me then, you figure G70 and G80 are both NV5X. I'm open to that. guess wel'll see in a few months :D

Why are you saying "G70 is NV50" etc? G70 is G70, right? Are you doing this because you had some information that pertains to NV50 and now you are saying that those pieces of information are now relevant to G70 (for example)? I think it's pretty obvious that G70 is the new code name for some future product and there will never be a product that reads NV50 when you peel off the heatsink.

I heard teh G80 was going to be 650/1600.....

Wasn't NV48 the NV45 with 512MB GDDR3? And since NV48 can be found in the Forceware drivers for a while now, this does look like a reasonable explanation (except for the fact that there's no Ultra version and the only 512MB versions are Ultras):

NVIDIA_NV48.DEV_0210.1 = "NVIDIA NV48"
NVIDIA_NV48.DEV_0211.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 6800 "
NVIDIA_NV48.DEV_0212.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 6800 LE "
NVIDIA_NV48.DEV_0215.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT "

I still think that NV48 is NV48 (NV40 + PCIE interface + 110nm TSMC). NV48 is not NV45 with any kind and size of memory on the card ;)

G70 is probably NV47 (24P/8V NV4x on an unknown process)

And G80 is probably an NV4x on 90nm (32P/10V possibly?)

this is closer to my guesses. although my guess is not exactly the same as yours, we're both thinking that G70 and G80 are both NV4x 8)

Ditto.

Question... which GPUs have appeared simultaneously in the drivers? Maybe we can rule out the possibility of some of them being one and the same. Edit - ok, we've established they're not.

"2 x NV41". I wonder if that implies 0.13u. You'd think "2x NV42" might be more likely.

Oops - wrote that the wrong way round. :oops: I meant G70 being a refresh of NV4x and G80 being new(ish) - perhaps the desktop equivalent of the PS3 GPU that David Roman mentioned?

Dudes, it's so simple I'm surprised y'all ain't figure it out yet. :rolleyes:

It's the code for their new duel GPU line-up; the G70 is two nV35s on one board and the G80 is two nV40s.
