So, while the Wccftech story seems questionable in terms of sources AMD has none the less released a "Pro" series of cards, that includes a 20 watt cut to Polaris 10 TDP at the same specs and basically same clock rate (40mghz difference): http://www.anandtech.com/show/10821/now-shipping-amd-radeon-pro-wx-series

A 13% improvement isn't a 50% improvement, and if expected to come in from an early process run card to later iterations. But that's 13% with seemingly no fanfare, unless it runs GDDR5x, of which there's no indication, it does seem AMD can release more efficient Polaris cards presently/in the near future.

These days there is no real relationship between clockspeeds and power limits.

13% is within the realm of die variation. Workstation cards tend to get the best dies (since they are sold for a lot more and in far smaller quantities). Compare the W7100 and R9 285.

I'd love it if AMD were to release a $160 WX 5100 desktop analogue, but that's probably just not economically feasible.

Exactly..I was just going to say this. Could just be(and probably is) better binned dies since the Pro market has lower volumes and higher margins. They'd be willing to pay more for lower power consumption. I'd be more interested in knowing what the TDP of the 1050 Mhz MXM version of RX480 is (Link here - http://www.anandtech.com/show/10811...f-pc-with-intel-core-i5-amd-radeon-rx480-usbc).

Just curious and separate topic but related to your news.
I may be wrong but arent the number of stream processors for the WX5100 the same as the 470D offered in China as a consumer part?

Appreciate different region, but was that also the reason for the 470D in China as it seems to be near enough the same (no idea about clocks though as this is not publicly confirmed for each product yet it seems) for CU and Stream Processors?
Or for China was it a way to create another performance tier between 460 and 470, I can see a valid reason for both considerations when looking at type of gamers in the region.

Power to performance profile for gaming is different to the primary use case for WX 5100, which is CAD. There is heavier emphasis on keep the clock as high as possible to maximize the primitive rate in this use case, where games is more shader/texture dominated.
 
Well it's probably worse for AMD to be selling the RX470 at $170, but IMO it's much better for a consumer getting a 4GB RX470 for $170 (I've seen it at $160 actually) than a 1050 Ti at $140.
Unless it's someone using a severely constrained PSU (under 300W?) then the 1050 Ti gets the best performance at <75W, I guess.

Where have you seem those prices? Right now im seeing in Amazon 175 used/ 180 new(I know) 470 and 185 used(claim "like new") 480 nitro. I would even prefer the 40 bucks more for the 480 used than the 140 1050ti new.

Also this prices are in my opinion the biggest problem in AMD sells right now. How the f*** is possible to get a 480 nitro for 238 and a much worse 470 for 200 and 220(4/8GB)? that just makes no sense.

I know I was talking about AMD pricing. the difference in price is just not worth it. there is little to no reason not spend a some bucks more and get the 480 even an used one for practically the same price as an 470.
 
Switching gears for a second: I was surprised that Bristol Ridge's GPU cores apparently have half-rate DP enabled. Which in turn means, it could be implemented in more GCN products as previously thought. Hawaii, at launch, was touted as quarter rate DP IIRC and half-rate-ability was only revealed later when the Fire Pro came out.

I'm not sure how much meat there is to the event, with a gaming host, DOTA e-sports player demo, and product giveaways.
Is there something that DOTA needs from a new CPU architecture?

An APU with a Polaris11-level iGPU and CPU cores that don't suck in single-core performance.
At least for the DOTA Pros who need constant 144 FPS Vsynced.
 
Apparently the Source2 Dota2 engine is highly threaded and lots of cores really helps.
