AMD RDNA4 Architecture Speculation

well there we have it.

They had to cut rope was likely their best decision then. I suppose the logic is that if FSR isn’t as good as DLSS no one will buy it. And to stay competitive, that probably required a clean break.

It’s an interesting development in the ML landscape for sure. Early on there was debate about whether ML is necessary and hand coded algorithms could do the same or better. Maybe with more time that would eventually be true but upscaling seems to be a clear win for ML and AMD is simply acknowledging that. Not sure they had any other choice.

AMD did the logical thing and cut ties with the past, but they have a huge marketing maneuver ahead of them. The 9070XT has less performance than 7900XTX, but supports better upscaling, the 9070XT will offer better image quality than 7900XTX too.

FSR4 will also start counting from zero, and will be hugely outnumbered by DLSS.

As a result, high end conscious customers will be confused a little about what to do. Do they downgrade from the 7900XTX to the 9070XT to access the new features? FSR4 will have zero marketshare in the beginning, if they value quality upscaling they would have to go with the wide spread option (DLSS), if they value performance they would also have to go with NVIDIA, if they value both then they also have no choice but NVIDIA.

In my opinion, FSR4 needed to launch with a high end option from AMD to avoid this whole mess.

I’m really not getting why you guys think this is a marketing problem for AMD. They crossed that bridge years ago when DLSS took off and was widely acknowledged as the superior solution. Anyone who bought AMD in the past chose to do so with full knowledge they were not getting ML upscaling. Why would those people be upset now because new AMD cards have new features?

AMD has never claimed in their marketing that FSR is on par with DLSS. It still wouldn’t matter if they did. They’re allowed to improve their products.

Interesting how different/similar will be to pssr and what it means for future of pssr (if its better then whats the point of sony investing in it more ?)
If FSR4 isn't available on PS5Pro, Sony still need to invest. But Sony's work on ML upscaling is a partnership with AMD, so Sony's work benefits AMD benefits Sony in the next hardware.

Luckily we don’t need to wait long. The details from RDNA4 should tell us largely what we need to know about what was done with 5Pro.

Mark Cerny gave an interesting presentation of PS5 Pro in the video linked in this post:

Sony & AMD have put together project Amethyst, which plans to develop better AI suited architecture(s) which not only can do the usual AI stuff, but are especially well suited for light CNNs used in games, create CNNs for game graphics & gameplay etc.
Nothing will be platform proprietary, both AMD and Sony are free to make technologies based on Amethyst stuff

hahahah they didn't announce it in their keynote. "we'll tell you more about RDNA4 and FSR4 later this quarter."

Damn. RDNA got Lenny'd.
Still 15 mins to go though, "just one more thing"?
edit: no RDNA 4 in show but was in prebriefing and now online everywhere

Did something get cut? Did they really bring out Matt Booty from Xbox just to announce that Call of Duty 6 would get some RDNA4 optimization at some indeterminate point in the future, all while AMD says nothing about the GPU's or architecture at all outside of saying FSR4 is a thing?

Disappointing, but also just bewildering. You'd think we're far enough along now that even some light high level overview of RDNA4 would make sense, even if they're not announcing products quite yet.

RDNA 4 & Ryzen Z2 got cut and Dell added compared to prebriefing

Some slides they sent to journalists:

It would have been better to say nothing at all about FSR4 and the 9070 than this "preview." Why not end with something like "and one last thing... we're going to have a special Radeon event on February 18 (or whenever down the line when AMD actually has something to talk about) where new Radeon architecture, products, and FSR4 will be shown." This meager "preview" inspires no enthusiasm and belies the confidence or excitement meant to be conveyed in the released slides. Disappointing and a bit baffling.
