Depends... HD6970 is closer to GTX580 than HD5870 to GTX480 (or HD4870 to GTX280) - still with a smaller die and ~$100 lower price...
we also expect 6970 to be bigger than 5870, while 580 is same size as 480.
So from die size POV the $$$/performance per mm2 advantage could be less if any.
It seems it will be all the same again
6950< 570 < 6970 < 580
And dualheaded hydras at the "halo" pr-top.

epic fake
I think you can't compare two different charts , settings like resolution is changed , cards changed , even test scenes could have changed .

3D Mark 11 results :

Obviously tessellation power is a big factor in the score , as evident by the GTX 465 beating GTX 460 by a decent margain .

I guess you guys with TN monitors just doesn't notice..

Better now? :)

And yes, looks like it's photoshopped from the 6870/460 slide as mao referenced.

It's not just about TN displays, I'm using one and could easily see the dark bars in original

Doubt AMd would compare 6970 to a old chip anyway.

I'm not questioning that the picture posted is a fake, but really? If 6970 isn't competitive with GTX580 then it would make sense to compare with GTX480. Nvidia would definitely do it, in fact they have done it in the past!

As far as I can tell the 6970 is not going to be as competitive as ATi hoped, and this is the reason for all the delays. The last time an ATi product was delayed like this (and engineering samples held back etc...) R600 turned out to be a steaming pile. This half gen is really starting to feel like the G80 gen all over again, Nvidia making a decent product to the general surprise of most people, and ATi being lttp with an underwhelming board.

Don't get me wrong, if 6970 is a good 10-15% ahead of GTX580 then I will happily eat my well deserved crow, but right now, I can't see it, thus my reasoning behind ATi using GTX480 as a benchmark as opposed to 580.

In most GTX 570 reviews , almost all reviewers confirmed seeing HD 69xx before the end of this year , no reason to worry about R600 fiasco happening all over again .

.

Eh? Nvidia finally get a "b" revision out the door so that they can sell in small quantities what they promised last year, and most people are generally surprised? I don't think so. There's no reason to think AMD is surprised either, and hasn't factored that in. And they still have Antillies at the high end whilst making smaller, cheaper chips that keep kicking Nvidia in the nuts. I don't see this round being any different just because ATI want to spend a couple of weeks clearing old inventory.
