some ppl here asked why I am not posting anymore, so I decided to show that I am still hanging around and I have my eyes and ears open...

Interesting enough... there's some rumours flying about new revision of parhelia...

I know you hate pre-hype, so I'll skip what i have heard (hearing means here something that cannot be prooven to be a fact.) and skip straight to the newest found of the MURCers...

check out http://rma.matrox.com and look all way down to product number list. There you can see parhelia's numbers, but there's five of them... not two. This is not very interesting because those are already known (64MB & 256MB) models that are there, but aren't available yet. Next thing IS something interesting: check out for product number "MGA-AGP8X-EXCTR" and "MGA-AGP8X-EXSAV". These are non existant products and haven't been on that list long.

and no, I don't think it is something that eats competitor's best cards as breakfast, but maybe something for market segment where the money is made.

IMO they definately need something for holiday season, or they can kiss goodbye for big sells.

Parhelia is being 'refocused' towards the Workstation market.

well, I agree partly.
what's coming, is definately focused for Mainstream or at least between Mainstream and High end. There's clear pattern for reducing manufacturing costs and getting more speed for fps intensive applications.

LeStoffer: okay, there's something to pre-hype. ;)

Maybe the "revised" Parhelia's won't have the suspected hardware glitch that causes horiztonal disturbances in specific cases.
I'm not familiar with that problem. What are the details?

Well as far as I know they workstation focused (Dave got that right) Matrox isn't going to step in the high performance race ati vs nvidia they simply can't afford it.........

Teaser:

Think Snow .......Think axe.............Think next gen axe.........Today I proudly anounce...... nothing :p for now I keep it for myself :p

I thought the Parhelia was an attempt to step into the higher performance race, but it basically failed so they went back to their "old ways"?

Basically, doing anything "hardcore" in a window on the screen causes horizontal flickering - like it's a really bad refresh rate. "Hardcore" ranges from playing UT in a window (how I found it), running and D3D SDK sample in a window or playing a DVD using PowerDVD.

Matrox's image quality rep may be in tatters.......

that thing, (whatever it was planned to be) never went so far that it could be materializing anytime soon. Propably never. And why talk about "next gen axe" if you are so close as you are trying to hint, you should know the real codename too...

Anyways, they have decided consentrate to Cellular / PDA market for now, so drop it. I don't really want to get some "RAMPAGE" & "FEAR" kind of post-hype flying around them. I am so tired that I don't want to start again telling things that should be known, but seems to be forgotten within 5 seconds. So my advice is, forget them forawhile. There's no use of telling specs something that will not come out. And eventually it all turns against them again. It has happened so many times before.

Do you think a Parhelia is too underpowered to play todays and tomorrows games? Seriously?
Sure, we can play todays and tomorrow games but for what price? I can also play today and tomorrow games with a ATI 8500 or an GF4TI 4200....

Yeah, but you can't play todays games on 3 screens using those cards - and yeah - I paid a price for that ability

Well it said ''Teaser'' and yes it is very uncertain(but u never know) that it will ever be realised it will be hard enough to get their foot into the Cellular / PDA market with that block they still carry around (glaze, axe..etc never to get really beyond the name vaporware) and every board still burns them to a crisp a real shame but that is how it goes........Well at least you can try and by that one axe board as a collecors item........ ;)

And Rampage was finished(no cash to make it)..... no flaming on that one........ But Fear and mojo those where all speculation and caused loads of speculations / flame wars.... Would be interesting do if anything they took from 3dfx/Gigapixel is used cause if it was very promising they might have just kept developing it and is now still a high tech futuristic feature to implement in nv3xx

Well as far as I can tell that never was Matrox goal or will it ever be...(dreaming about it maybe) Matrox always has focused on specific consumers/bussiness and Hardcore 3D never was really in that.

Besides Matrox Parhelia is a kickarse card just compared to the new R300 and nv30 it lacks in speed but again brings great features to the market and the best imagequality around :)

....... provided that you don't play games in a window or watch DVDs. Damn - I really hope they can fix this problem.

heh

heh. Not to be a troll, but it's really more accurate to say that the Parhelia lacks in speed compared to the Radeon 8500 and the Geforce 4 Ti. ^_^

Not to be a fanboi, but it's more accurate to say that the 8500 and Ti4600 lack in speed when FAA (FSAA for 8500 and Ti4600) is used compared to the Parhelia :p

Yes, I do...for $400 the card barely outperforms the R8500 which can be purchased for <$100 (and in some situations it is slower than it). The R8500 is not powerful enough that I would buy it today if I were in the market for a new card. By the same token the Parhelia is too slow.

And as for the whole triple view thing...it's a nifty feature, but when the card doesn't cut it at 1024*768, then there's no way in hell it will cut it at 3072*768.
