Super Mario Galaxy GDC Trailer

Is it just me or did the lighting get a whole lot better? Other thing of note graphically the game seems to have a sick sense of size and draw distance even to RS3.

New screens:

Definitely check out the video though, those screens can't really give you a sense of the scale of the game and don't show off the real nice animation. Definitely puts all currently released Wii software to shame when it comes to the graphics department.

Mario Galaxy is a fantastic looking game. I'd like to see some more extended gameplay, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Is that normal mapping or bump mapping on that volcano? And why the hell are the screens at the wrong resolution? That really causes some weird aliasing issues with the screens.

Regarding the Mario Galaxy trailer. If that is what they can do with two Gamecubes duct taped together, imagine what they could do with three!

Heres the youtube version:

There might not be normal mapping on the volcano but there is normal mapping in other areas in the video. Like the metal block that mario runs over about half way though the vid. It also features some outstanding motion blur effects. My jaw dropped.
I mean these are the kind of visuals I've been talking about being possible on the Wii for quite awhile but seeing this was still shocking. The game looks outstanding. Underpowered my ass.

Effects seem similar to Pikmin 2 quality, but on everything instead of just a few objects in the scene, with higher scene complexity and a better framerate.
3x gamecube sounds good.

I don't remember Pikimin 2 look anything like this but I gues that's your opinion. Yeah and 3x Gc does sound good.

One thing very apparent looks like surface shaders, on the peach and dragon. There's a lighter area around the rims of 'fuzzy' objects. But on reflection, rather than pointing to 'shaders' I think it's a an additive sphere-mapped highlight. Technically, again, I'm not seeing anything above and beyond GC's abilities in terms of effects available, though of course having lots more speed with the same hardware lets you apply more effects.

I like how complex the background objects are (one on shot, I believe there were those boats with propellers spinning at the back against the binary stars exchanging lava/plasma) . The game really uses depth of field to a nice effect of enhancing the sense of distance rather than just a tool for motion blur (*cough*Burnout*cough*).

But yes, there seems to be a sort of "rim mapping" (Pirahna plant). Perhaps to give the illusion of subsurface scattering?

There are certain effects Pikmin 2 didn't do that clearly SMG does. And for one, the lighting looks alot more complex.

The presentation video was in 30fps, but the other GDC playthrough videos show it running at 60fps. Pikmin 2 ran at 30fps, if I recall.

Think of some of the effects Pikmin 2 had on some of the bosses and environment stuff. Mainly, think of the boss battles where there wasn't anything on screen except a simple environment sometimes with advanced texturing here or there, a giant spectacular looking boss, and your pikmin. And pikmin 2's bosses used quite a diverse variety of special effects.

Pikmin 2 ran at an unstable 30fps.
