Stumbled across this and thought it might be of interest, it's a joint SCEI/IBM patent. It was filed for in July 04, published late last month:

I've not read it yet, so I can't vouch for its relevance/quality/significance or how original its contribution is, but I figured it might possibly be a good point of discussion. At least, it's interesting to see IBM and Sony working together on rendering (and this was done at Austin).
