[360, PS3] Aliens vs Predator

Heh, all those tech buzz words and it still looks like crap. Atleast the 360 demo did.

Perhaps there's a lesson there for those that like to play "checkbox wars". :D

You think those marine singleplayer console videos posted in this thread on previous page looks crap?

maybe MP demo its not very impresive visually (small map etc) but far cry from being crap imo. Nice gfx with silky smooth framerate thats more then many more fps out there have to offer.

Ok this is going to sound really ignorant but:

I thought it was decided that a Deferred Rendering engine would be extremely difficult on the 360 due to the edram? Is that why this game is Sub-HD?

No problems at all finding a match on the PC version... ever. Always in a game in one minute max.

I only tried the PS3 demo once and it took a lot longer, but still had a game going in 5 mins or so.

I've had no problems finding matches quickly on the 360 version...Today, I had 29 kills with a killstreak of 15 and that was with the Marine..Whoever says that character class sucks just doesn't know to properly play..

Dire demo! A poor example of a weak online game mode, and it's worked well in destroying interest. It's too hard to get to grips with the controls (why can't my Predator shoot?!) and I have no incentive to persevere. I makes no sense to have aliens fighting aliens and Predators hunting Predators, making a mockery of their cloaks. The alien's wall-crawling is great in principle, but after moving above a marine and having him in my sights, I dropped down only to lose sight and couldn't find the guy. There was no way to launch an attack from where I was, from what I could see (didn't have the Grab option appear). And what does Focus do? Why would I switch predator view modes? What does interacting with the environment do?

All in all, another shabby demo. I wonder how many lost sales it'll take the industry to learn what it takes to make a demo that actually attracts customers?!

Totally agree Shifty. I don't want anything to do with this game after playing the demo. The demo is just an Epic Fail imo. Unbelievably really.

On the bright side, it saved me $60 because I probably would have bought this game.

When you're above the marine, you can either tail lash him from where you're hanging, or use Focus and do a pounce on him. It's tremendous fun once you master it :)

My friend who has a modded 360 showed me the game today & I noticed one thing about the AA while he was playing. The edges remained smooth & clean most of the time when the player is standing still, it is when the player starts moving that the edges swarm with crawling jaggies. Now normally those jaggies should still be visible when the player stops but instead, as soon as the player stopped those edges became remarkably smooth.

It may be something different as what I saw was just a brief observation.

Could it be you're describing the motion blur effect here?

AlStrong says the AA is variable:

I've played quite a few games now...and the deathmatch gameplay is pretty dull IMO. Things get really awkward when someone is performing a grab tackdown, and then someone else starts attacking the attacker. Needs some ability to drop the victim I think.

Perhaps I misjudged the game graphically though by saying UE3 could have produced the same results...UE3 (PS3 version at least) has nothing on this! SSAO, I pretty sure there is AA, very stable framerate and little tearing (though the Alien's view seems to incur more tearing in my experience). Lighting is very good and the bloom is pretty ;)

GI expected the game to control like Halo or COD and its apparent they are not even fans of the Alien and Predator movies..I'd take their useless "review" with a grain of salt as it doesn't mean anything to me...

Exactly, I find it extremely annoying when people down a game because they can't get comfortable with the controls because they've been playing some other game for so long. Even more annoying are the ones that don't want to learn the controls because it's too complicated. As far as the free for all....well duh Sherlock, it's called deathmatch.

As for the game I've played a few MP matches and I had lots of fun. Played as Marine and Alien. I just wish the game looked much better though. I can't help but think if this game was using UE3 it would so awesome. They got the sounds perfect for the pulse AR and radar, but the SG needs more audio punch.

IMO the sounds are awful! The marine's default weapon is just grating. The radar blip when there's nothing around you is too loud...and a little pointless. You only really need a blip sound to tell you when there's something nasty nearby, not to tell you that there isn't  but when something does come your way the radar sound is suitable and builds up suspense nicely.

Um...the sounds are exactly like in the Alien movie...

But in a modern game the sounds come off as cheesy and annoying in my opinion ;)

Then don't buy or play the game...very simple.;)

What the hell is a moderm sounding game anyway?...LMFAO.

The Aliens universe takes place in the future so it's MORE modern than modern games....lol.

Wow the single player campaign looks really good.

Indeed. But he's still allowed to share his opinions

It depends what the reason is. Sometimes it's just switching over to a new scheme. eg. In shooters that have common controls, often I'll find the grenade button moved or similar, which takes a bit of adjustment (and a few unfortunate teamkills!). However, sometimes the controls are hard to get used to because they are counter-intuitive or clumsy, and coming off the back of anyother game (something every gamer will be doing) isn't the reason why controls are complained about. I found the marine in AvP very straight-forward as a typical FPS soldier. I found the other two classes kinda awkward. I may well have learnt them eventually, like learning to fly a plane in Warhawk, but if the learning curve requires too much effort and the game isn't rewarding, there's zero incentive. So ideally every game should be aiming to get as close as possible to 'pick up and play' to elliminate the frustrations of starting out. Or have a decent practice/training mode. The AvP demo is a joke in that department, explaining absolutely nothing and expecting players to work through a deathmatch guessing at controls and abilities while people keep killing them.

But of course...as the saying goes it's better to remain silent and be thought of a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Cheesy sound efffects....right...lets use completely foreign SFX that has nothing to do with the Aliens universe....yeah that's it. Or maybe the developers could add light sabers to the arsenal... Wow some people are completely out of touch with reality.

Reviews for this are all over the place.

I think the factors involved are:

1. What the reviewer's favorite FPS at the moment is
2. How long it took him (based on perhaps #1 or other factors) to get used to the controls
3. If he liked the source material
4. Wasn't looking for "deep plot and narrative" from the Alien\Predator campaigns (in particular the alien campaign as none of your characters talk lol).

Alot of the complaints I personally don't agree with when playing this title, but this very well could be a niche game.

This isn't Halo, this isn't Modern Warfare, this isn't Bioshock.

Although quite frankly I don't see why some of the reviews say it has weak visuals. Even the Demo has amazing graphics and asset quality, and all the HD trailers I've seen blow my mind too.

It's really is a curious thing. This game is controversial lol.

Yeah no wonder games get dumbed down.. :(

Might be interesting to know which version they played and also might be bloom whores.

^The 360 version atleast, looks extremely good with sharp IQ & very good shadow filtering/resolution...its quite close to the non Dx11 PC version. Though water interaction/movement is shit in this game & it doesn't looks so nice either.
