Im considering buying a 360 but I own a 5:4 lcd, i would like to know if when you choose the 1280x1024 option in the 360 bios; some games will work at that resolution or you will see only the area for 1280x720.

Also do you know if its compatible with normal RCA home theaters (for all 5.1 channels)?

some games work nice on 1280x1024 . some games get stretched (mainly games rendered in 600p i think like PGR3 and i believe COD3)

A few run natively in that res but all games will scale to that res if you are using the VGA cable from my understanding. I don't think you get bars unless you have a 4:3 monitor.

Try here.

Not IME. I've got an Intec VGA cable, but most of the games are letterboxed despite the resolution being set to 1280*1024 when I play it on my LCD. Call of Duty2 fills the screen, but GOW, GRAW, and most demos I've tried are letterboxed.

Could be the crappy VGA cable or my monitor, who knows. What games are 1280 x 1024 native btw?

Last summer we had guys test their games for this. This info may be old based on the MS updates have changed some of this in the past (for the better). Most games on a 1280x1024 display will be letterboxed in a psuedo-720p (1280x720). Some games, like DoA4, will run at the native resolution. A couple games, including PGR3, will ge stretched (small framebuffer scaled). On a CRT you can squash the image. On an LCD... your BEST bet is to purchase an LCD with 1:1 pixel mapping. This is a very useful feature anyhow and well worth hunting for. Many HDTV Monitors support such. Anyhow, in almost all cases you will get a letter boxed image at 720p on a 1280x1024 resolution. In the exceptions you need to fiddle.

MotoGP's native framebuffer res is also 1280*1024, but it comes squeezed for anamorphic stretching when scaling.

why scale if thats the native resolution?

do you know of any patches for games to work at 1280x1024?
