[360] Alan Wake - Still awake

Does the cover on your copy look like it was printed on a laser printer? ;)

Err, yes?! How would they else made the cover nowadays?
With the old letter press printing thing of Gutenberg, or what ;)

But (and my intention is clearly to raise a WW 3), it is funny that an US citizen accuses an European of piracy, when I have to pay 70 Euro for the game...and you guys pay what? 50 Bucks or so - this is what I call piracy!

Now, seriously: it makes me said how much piracy is on the advance on the Xbox360...these games deserve better than getting downloaded at a dubious portal!

Yeah its sucks to almost pay 2 times the price us citizens pay for games.

Ordered alan wake from Gamehubs still didn't get my copy never do that again ill just go with a retailer in my own country and get games on release date instead of saving 7 euro's. Probably the dutch part in me which found that a smart idea we are cheap bastard.

But good news Alan wake is scoring sales in the uk almost beating Fifa wk 2010 this week i believe its only 1k behind the combined sales of fifa ps3 and 360 version.

Yeah, you are right.
But sometimes, I want the game immediately (for instance AW)!
Then I can pre-order it at my local game shop...their special service is that good customers get the game maybe 1, maybe 2 days before streetdate! If I want this, I pay the regular price, which is 70 Euro. In case of AW, I got the game even at Wednesday, although the streetdate was Friday!
If I can wait for the game, there are sure possibilities to save some money...

Anybody have any links to where they have detached the camera & did any fly overs of the levels? Saw one on Inside Xbox & it was pretty cool. The terrain & level of detail was insane. The roots of the original open world I assume.

Just playing through the first chapter now. Graphics are definitely unique. Some dithered shadows, dithering in Alan Wake's hair. Low resolution is fairly apparent and there are some low res textures, and some low geometry models, as have been pointed out. Fog seems to be very low res and anything covered by fog gets blurred. Once things transition out of the fog, they become much more defined. The fog almost has a vaseline like effect. I've also seen some artifacts, that I'm not sure what's causing them. I was looking at a cardboard box, and I was standing completely still. The texture on one side of the box would blur and then become sharp, and then blur and repeat. I'm not sure why it was happening. I'd though maybe a low res light or faint shadow was moving across the side of the box from somewhere, that was causing it to lose fidelity, but I couldn't figure out what it would have been. I've also seen some edges and textures shimmering with bright spots that seemed out of place.

That said, I think the game looks good, and it is definitely very different than anything else on the market. When the taken arrive, and the fog starts rolling, causing shadows to race along the ground, with all the light passing through and over the moving foliage, the overall impression is great. I'm not sure I've played a game this gen where so much of the screen is moving at once. There seem to be a ton of moving parts on screen at all times, between the fog, shadows, light, foliage and physics based objects. The game definitely shines at night.

As for gameplay, I think the controls are solid. They did a nice job of that. He has the same kind of feel as Max Payne, in terms of movement, and the gun/flashlight are very responsive.

The story is pretty interesting, but the scripting and voice acting are not great. Reminds me a lot of Max Payne, with all the weird television and radio shows. Stop, watch and listen, because some of those bits are pretty entertaining. I'm definitely looking forward to some of the later game, to see how crazy it gets. Max Payne got pretty crazy with the nightmare sequences.

So far, I'm liking it.

"Can't see the forest for the trees" has never been more appropriate when describing some of the criticism of the graphics. Really, the complaints are mostly valid, but it's missing the entire picture. The look of this game is really starting to grow on me. It's not perfect, but it definitely has a great presentation.

I thought that the voice acting was weak at the start too, but I'm now into chapter 3 and I have to admit my opinion on it has changed. Kind of how you describe the presentation as somewhat unique, the voice work seems to be deliberately "unnatural" in a Coen Brothers / David Lynch kind of way, where the inflections sometimes seem "off", or the conversations are somewhat stilted.

In a few hours of gameplay I've gone from "woah, poor voice acting" to "I really like the voice work".

Doesn't that 70 Euro include vat ?

I have to pay $60 plus 7% sales tax in jersey. So I'm paying $64usd vs $70 euro. Take into account the sheer amount of languages that they have to suport in europe might be another reason for the greater cost. Not ot mention all the diffrent laws in each country of the EU . The united states has a single law system that encompases a greater selling base than the EU last I checked and uses1 language.

Sorry for the OT:

"Damn being in australia. Damn it damn it damn it. $120 games, awful internet, and spiders with health bars."

:p ;)

Im on Epidose 3, and i must say its a very creepy game, the shooting mechanics are very tight and well done. Thats Remedy for you. The Lighting alone is the best i have seen in any game on any console, same goes for the wind and fog effects.

The only complaint i would have is that its a tad blurry in the day scenes.

I got to play this for only about an hour and already in love with it. The beautiful setting, the mystery and the search for answers have really grabbed me right from the start. The graphics looked pretty good actually, the lighting, shadows, physics and volumetric particles served really well to the atmosphere though the blurry textures and low poly placeables do get in the way at times. The game is more linear than I thought but it works well so far to get the pacing going, the music score gave me boners and sounds splendid on my new 7.1:). Gonna have hellava night.
Anyone seen Stephen King's "Secret Window" with Johnny Depp? I'm surprised how much resemblance it bears to the game.
