[360] Alan Wake - Still awake

I don't know any games that render in 720p natively that look better upscaled to 1080p.
I think FF13 looked better in upscaled 1080p, its a bit softer but its certainly better because of the tiny amount of soft touch it gets to the already razor sharp IQ....But then again that's just me.

720p to 1080p involves just one upsampling step, though.
the bad with subHD games today is that you need to upsample them from the subHD res to 720p and then again from 720p to 768p or 1080p

Well I mean in terms of the processing per pixel that can be done. Lower res means more processing time available to spend manipulating those pixels, hence why next gen I think the best looking games will run at resolutions less than 1920x1080, and I'm sure they will receive lots of flack for it as well even if they do look better.

I understand your point; I was just trying to say that in my opinion people use to whine about low-res games just because low-res means upscaling and upscaling means blur, "jaggies" and artifacts (low image quality overall).
hopefully next-gen 720p games will have very good amounts of anti-aliasing to achieve high IQ even when upscaled to 1080p.

I think devs should give gamers graphics option just like there is in every PC game. We can choose high res + less effects or vice versa. :D

The game plays great from what people says, but it is a bit disappointing given that we are already in 5th year of current generation.

Well, to some extent there is customization in games already. Some games let you adjust screen effects like film grain, colour saturation etc. Uncharted, Mass Effect and Left 4 Dead come to mind.

To be honest, I like that console games are highly tailored experiences. Every design decision is made carefully and for a purpose.

I still don't think there's any room for other resolutions there. Either it's the memory consumption or the fragment shader cost, but the game just can't run at a higher resolution even without the antialiasing, there is some other bottleneck there.

Can move the resolution talk back to the Tech forum? I don't need 2 threads for it.

The sad part is people don't realize lower resolution games can actually look significantly better unless you have a monster sized tv. The same thing will happen next gen where 1080p will be expected to be the norm, but the best looking games will be 720p.

But aren't the best looking games this gen in fact 720p, the expected norm?

Why would they do that? Most serious videogame mags have stated that the game looks impressive, and from the vid I saw it does. Actually most people agreed till we heard about the resolution...
For me the reactions/noise around alan Wake are only a testament to how good the game looks no matter some short coming...

Weren't they looking at videos in a small window or bullshots or on PC?

Perhaps now, but there's only so much performance you can get from these consoles... Perhaps in their extended life cycle, they have to start dropping a few aspects like resolution to increase others that appeal more to consumers in order to maintain the graphical evolution for so long...

First Alan Wake review from spanish mag, 93/100!
Spanish magazine Hobby Consolas has the first printed review of the upcoming action thriller Alan Wake. Hobby Consolas says Alan has spectacular lightning, atmosphere and sounds combined with big scares and a perfect story rhythm that will leave you glued to the controller from start to finish. Alan Wake receives a 93/100. The length of the game according to 2 reviewers was 10-16 hours.
