"2x the power of the GC," can someone clarify what this means? (ERP)

Ugh, I didn't mean to double-post but I really meant to touch on this. The $2000 dev kits are a way of enticing less wealthy Euro and Chinese developers I think.

If I'm not mistaken, and this is kind of off-topic didn't Nintendo open a studio in Shanghai a couple of years ago? At least, this would fit nicely in with Yamauchi's Fund Q policy, underwriting a game's development up to a certain stage to see if it finds a publisher.

I also think that there'll be a lot of portability between GCN/REV/Gameboy's next iteration. The low price of the dev kits tells me that Nintendo's looking to incubate a lot of development - it would only make sense that if Rev isn't bleeding edge, Nintendo's next portable might be able to a lot of the same things.

greg3d, there is no Shanghai based Nintendo development studio. Are you mistakingly referring to the relatively new Tokyo EAD studio formed in April of '03? Yamauchi's Q-fund initially simply offered low interest loans to developers who were willing to fund GC specific titles esp. those that fostered GBA connectivity. Generally the developer could either self-publish, find a publisher, or allow Nintendo to do so. (like Skip iirc) Or in the case of FF:CC, Square-Enix published the title in jpn, & Nintendo in every other region.

Hannibal from arstechnica said that Apple refused the mobile processor because the jump to Intel, it seems that the Revolution Broadway is this CPU.

Well I hope people can come to accept what the Revolution is not. It is not a PS3 or 360 clone, nor is it just an underpowered version of the PS3 or 360 and that one handed wand controller is not just a fad that will be dropped. The machine is being made for everyone, and so it has to be seen from the eyes of everyone and not just current jaded gamers.
It will have it's share of traditioal games like FPS and RPG games which will look and sound great but it will also have it's share of those one handed games that have been so succesful on the DS like AC:WW, Brain training, Nintendogs, Electroplankton etc. If Nintendo had intended the Revmote+nunchuck to be the basic experience, they wouldn't have made them detachable nor would they be promoting the system with just the wand controller so prominently in pics and videos.
If you're just looking for another cheaper version of the 360 or PS3 you will likley be disapointed. On the other hand if your looking for a little of that plus a whole lot of something new I think it will be a great system. Keep on open mind.

This is just a curiosity, perhaps Revolution CPU is something between 750GX and 970FX in arquitecture, something like the equivalent of a PentiumM in a PowerPC architecture.

I think that this is a interesting idea after all Core duo (is said at least) still based on P3 (could we call it a extension of P3? like IGN say) or even Conroe is said to share some key architetures parts with P3 (just PR?) but it seems it is not considered a extension of P3:???:

And it would make more sense as Nintendo wouldnt pay the bill alone as it could be used in Apple PCs too...

Still I am sceptical...

And if that is true it is very interesting once that the latest offer from IBM to the mobile it is the 970FX at 1,6Ghz (17W, less than many from Intel IIRC) so they wouldnt offer a outdated and less capable CPU for a time after that (after all Broadway is not made yet) so it make me very curious as , if that is true, I guess that it is based on a new architeture.

Do you mean that , while being innovative etc..., it just cant play the same games even if at reduced qualitity/rez? If so why?

I think the quality of those traditionals games will be great on the REV so it won't be technical issue, but I think where it will disapoint is in the quantity of those types of games. So if you are a very traditional gamer looking just for FPS and RPG's with the REV I suspect there will be droughts and in that time you will be bored and feel the system is being under supported. If on the other hand you are willing to try out something new( or old ) to fill in the space between when you are waiting for your traditional choice, you will probably find some good stuff.

Ok.

I think that is true in % terms, in absolute terms it will use dev cost and/or power as a variable IMO (ie eg ifit is indeed cheap enought many may try their luck/if it can run the UE3 then I think it will have a lot of multiplateform games).

Core Duo 1.66Ghz has a power consumption of 31W and is only 20% more faster (in real applications) than a G5 1.6Ghz.

Core Duo is an enhaced Dual Pentium3 capable of execute 3 instructions per clock cycle instead of 2, Conroe can do 4 and 970FX can do 5. The advantage of 970FX against Core Duo doesn´t finish here, Core Duo has 2 FPU (one per core) but the real advantage of G5 is that it has 2 VMX units capables everyone to do SIMD operations in one single cycle.

Conroe only has 1 SSE4 with the same power of a VMX from 970FX and the 970FX has 2 units.

Why the people things that a G5 1.4 or 1.6Ghz is bad cpu for game applications? I cannot understand this, I cannot because G5 eats the better Intel design in the market in the terms of performance per watt and is a CPU from 2003 that at the same time is a single core version of a server CPU form 1999.

Where do you get the idea that this CPU seems to be Broadway? (did Hannibal say that?) Also could you give me some details on the CPU you're talking about.

Yes that's all I was focusing on, given that Nintendo has a finite amount of resources like every company, choices have to be made. In order to be inclusive and bring on these new non gamers some other support wil have to be sacrificed. Let's hope Nintendo is succesful in building a larger installed based allowing 3rd parties to fill in some gaps.

I don´t know nothing Teasy, I am only using logical sense.

1. Nintendo never designed a CPU from 0 but they ever modified existing CPUs

2. I have more faith in Hannibal than Matt-IGN

3. I work in Apple Europe and I can assure that Jobs lies about the impossibility of a portable with 970FX, iBook G5 and PowerBook G5 prototypes were ready since January 2005. Someone from ASUS can confirm this fact, Apple is lying.

You completely completely misunderstud my post, also I never said that a 970 would be bad.

What I said is that, I see little reason for Nintendo (or Apple) to use a CPU based (a extension of) on a outdated 750 since there is much better CPUs (like the 970FX) that can easy be used on their console, but if we can consider a Core Duo or even a Conroe a extension of a (based on) P3 then from the P3 to those CPUs there is a huge jump in performance (and I think it is safe to say that any of those will run easly any PC game till mid 07 eg UE3, Crysis...) and if they can do such a jump using a extension of Gekko (like you said) then such CPU may be good enought (for a very cost effective console) and still be very comparable to PC CPUs.

I am still scptical as the move from Intel is because a bad move with P4s, they do have a reason to "come back" but I think that IBM does not have.

<quote>Here's something that I've heard: when they were going back and forth with IBM over The Switch, Apple was offered the Revolution chip for use in their portables. This tidbit makes a lot of sense if the Revolution chip is a modified 970.</quote>

Hannibal is miles off, on almost everything.
Looks to me like he's just recycling ****** wishful thinking from forums.

The thing about Matt is he doesn't try too hard to interpret what he's told, or to speculate on specifics.

IMO Matt tried far to hard to interpret and speculate on the info he was given by developers in his initial Revolution articles.

That can be interpreted in so many ways...

At least we will "only" need to wait about 60 days by now, yet it is too long...

Well he could just give a full quote, we would do the interpretation/especulation for him:LOL:.

Dear Readers,

I’ve enjoyed spoiling information about our upcoming game No End Soon for several months. There’s only one huge problem, I’m fired and the experiment failed. Without noticing it seems I’ve indeed broken our NDA with Nintendo. While this doesn’t have direct influence on the game development of No End Soon, it has direct consequences for me personally. In other words, this experiment failed and I’m fired.

This also means everything I’ve scheduled in the past is cancelled forever. I’ve no permission to reply to any comments anymore, so please understand this will be my last post here forever. Everything which will remain unclear is something I can’t help.

I regret it has to go this way, as I really enjoyed this unique development cycle. While this last post may be seen as some kind of victory for some of you, I can assure you this is something you didn’t want to happen and you will understand why at E3.

This post will be up for only a few days and gets deleted afterwards. I’m not aware any more of what is happing in the project, so I simply can’t update you anymore, as I'm gone. I’m fired for a few weeks already, but today I decided to tell you all it happened.

Now to end this last post, I’d like to thank you all, both believers and disbelievers. Both of you will be surprised at E3, when both of you can see this product in running action in real time. The fun will in fact start in a few days already actually. The last minute change which happened at GCD was real, whether you believe me or not. This information will be revealed at GCD. Before I got fired I was aware of some things –not all- that Mr.Iwata will announce at GCD. It will be a true E3-teaser show. I lied about the controller changes? I did not, you will see at GCD. Remember the minor changes I told you before about the controller (reason why I’ve never showed you a full picture of the controller).

You will NOT know anything about the third revolutionary aspect at GCD, but you will certainly get teased. You will know lots of new details. You will know more about the DVD attachment. You will know more about the flash memory. You will know more about Revolution-DS connectivity. You will know more about (if not all) about Virtual Console. You will hear new game announcements. You will NOT see actual game screenshots/video of Revolution games, but you will see the controller in action of the you know which highly anticipated game. You will get almost exactly the same global release date schedule as I’ve given before. This GCD will be a real preview of what’s coming at E3.

To end this I strongly suggest you all and specially the non believers to keep an eye at the minor changes of the controller. You should be able to know which NDA I’ve broken as these minor changes will more or less reveal the third revolutionary controller.

The official website of this game will launch days before E3. I was told this before I got fired as well. No End Soon working title is gone and replaced by the final name. As soon the website will turn up I will turn up at IGN/Gamespot to confirm this, which will prove this whole experiment was real, but failed because I’ve gave in to much into requests of give more hints.

Please enjoy the future,
Signing out – Mr.Inc

Translation: I ran out of believable lies, and I just don't feel like keeping up this game until E3. I'll have to admit, I was always curious about how this blog was going to end after GDC (I mean, GCD, heh) or E3. This was a somewhat clever ending, I suppose.

Didn't he mention previously that final devkits were already out in the hands of developers?

And he previously mentioned that information from developers couldn't be released at the time he promised because Nintendo changed their PR conference plans due to some sort of shocker move by Sony. This makes zero sense because developers don't sit and wait for a PR conference before lifting their NDA. We develop for the PS3 and you don't catch us waiting for a Sony PR conference.
