Virtua Fighter Project!

Nesh

Double Agent
Legend

I am very disappointed non of you guys made a thread about this!

The off screen footage looks incredible. Sega appears to have given more attention to the presentation this time too, as they have seen how important it is for fighting games to have strong personality.

I hope this is a complete reboot that connects the franchise with Shenmue

Only good looking fighting game nowadays is Mortal Kombat and this looks very promising. Nostalgia hits hard, remember times where fighting games were top notch graphics killers.

Bullet point translations from ResetEra of a Famitsu interview:
  • The big gap in releases after VF5 were due to various circumstances, one of which being where they could take the series and its place in the market
  • Lots of higher ups at SEGA are genuine fans of VF
  • The Producer of the game, Yamada, was hand selected by RGG Studio head Yokoyama for his ideas of making BF innovative rather than strictly following current fighting game trends
  • They're gonna lean into the realism aspect of VF with the story. They specifically noted how VF is a game about *normal* (albeit with superhuman strength) people fighting
  • "If Kazuma Kiryu fires a Hadoken, it's no longer realistic but fantasy, but Tetsuzanko can portray a realistic drama."
  • RGG will bring things that make them unique that other fighting games don't have. "It could be drama, direction, or the ability to create a whole town."
  • Yamada personally researched old interviews with Yu Suzuki to understand the essence of VF
  • They note the heavy Kung-Fu film influence on VF, and how they want to preserve that for the new game
  • Yokoyama notes that a lot of SEGA protags have their bangs up (Akira, Kiryu, Ryo Hazuki)
  • Yamada says the reading your opponent's moves and execution will still be a part of high level play
  • They believe VF at its core is a simple game but understand the reputation it's received for being difficult. One example being that because there's no special moves, it's difficult for new players to understand what to do first. The dev team wants to do more to ease the player in and address the hurdles
  • Yamada directly admits that the lack of character motivations being explained in the games were a huge problem and they are going to address that, heavily implying a story mode being present
  • Yokoyama compares other fighting games with flashy special moves to professional wrestling, and describes VF being more like K-1
  • "It's not about changing the rules or making the screen more flashy. It's about amplifying the appeal of the matches while keeping them plain and serious. That's what I think we need to do from my perspective." - Yokoyama
  • The new VF is being developed as a home release first and foremost. There are no discussions of bringing the game to arcades at this time
  • Yokoyama acknowledges how VF is known but not played by the younger generation. Their goal is to make VF appeal to those people, but also satisfy the returning players. Specifically notes that if they wanted to forgo appealing to older players, they would of dropped the name "VF"
  • Yamada says the teaser trailer was made quickly and efficiently
  • They say VF and Project Century are using two different game engines
  • They announced their two new projects before the release of Pirate in Hawaii to impress the industry with how many projects they're working on
  • Controllers are being developed with console controllers in mind, states that they want a control scheme that is simple and that veteran players can be familiar with, but say that VF doesn't have to be only three buttons
  • Some stages will have traditional ring outs, some won't, some will have ring outs but with specific conditions. The teaser trailer was based on this idea
  • The location of the trailer is not Japan
  • Won't comment on the potential of their being more than 1 on 1 battles
  • The time setting they're keeping a secret for now
  • Confirms Stella is NOT Sarah Bryant, and it will be easily understood when the time comes. Says veteran players will not be disappointed
  • "It looks like there will be a mix of new and old characters. What will happen to Lau and Shun? I hope you'll look forward to that too."
  • Won't comment on post launch support (they say it's not being considered but lol cmon RGG). Yokoyama says if they were to do season support, it would be unique compared to how other fighting games are doing it
  • Yamada says he had meetings with Yu Suzuki and they shared a lot of ideas on where to take the series next
  • Reiterates that the new VF will be a new direction for the series
I bolded the lines that stood out to me. They are saying all the right things to leave me optimistic for the first time in years.
