Sony PlayStation 5 Pro

PSSR is nowhere near as good as we were initially led to believe. At lower resolutions, it's simply terrible and it has major issues with specular highlights and grass.

The stability leaves a lot to be desired.
Eh I'm not so sure. As it stands, there are more good implementations than there are bad. News outlets farming negativity for views is not entirely surprising but, it helps to paint a picture about it being negative when the reality is somewhat mixed. The games that seem to have issues are the ones using DLSS ultra performance levels of input resolutions and I'm not so sure many here would ever consider using DLSS ultra performance. All in all, it's pretty much a wait and see for me. I've always insisted that the base minimum acceptable input resolution for any reconstruction algorithm is 1080p. So when I see these resolutions being fed to the reconstruction algorithms, I sincerely question the thought process of those in charge of implementing the feature. Ignoring reconstruction, those resolutions are not even acceptable under any circumstance in 2024. Attempting to use reconstruction to save your bad work is always a recipe for disaster.

At the end of the day, it's about craftsmanship. I cannot release anything of that quality and consider it acceptable. I'd rather delay and get it right the first time than release it in that state.

I mean, yeah, that's my point. At 1440p, even FSR looks pretty good. It's when you drop below 1080p that upscalers get challenged and PSSR doesn't seem to be doing too hot right now.

Next game I wanna see is DD2.

That's fair but again one would have to serious question why developers are dropping below 1080p at all. The vast majority of developers seem capable of ensuring they meet their resolution and performance targets. Dropping below 1080p for raster graphics is taking us all the way back to 2005-2010 era.

I’m seeing a pattern of developers adding raytracing features and other things like “quality mode” to their already low resolution performance modes on the Pro. Their main priority in pro performance should be upping the resolution and giving us a much better image quality. That should be its main purpose and then if there is any overhead add some stuff. So no, I’m not putting it on PSSR when these devs can’t control themselves.

it looks quite good i'd say, but i'm no tech expert, though i wonder if the ghosting effect on the dark wall surface is due to PSSR or motion blur.
you can't switch graphics mode during game, i'll try the "8K" mode later, it downsamples to 4K.

Yeah, but Alan Wake 2 certainly isn't the norm. PlayStation gets smoked like a cigar in this game. I'd like to see more neutral games such as Dragon's Dogma 2, Frontiers of Pandora, or even Sony exclusives like Ragnarok and Forbidden West.
Guess we will have to wait for those, linus tech tips did some comparisons but with a 7800XT. The latter did win mostly.
