Newcomer
One thing is certain, GTA VI is one of the most anticipated games of all time if not the most.

But another thing is certain too, 2025 in gonna be a packed year.

When it comes to GTA VI, at this point anyone in the gaming circle know why it can be a big and a great game, and of the biggest launches in entertainment history. But can someone already "claim" it'll be the 2025 GOTY at TGA?

Let's look at some possible contenders for the big GOTY award:

Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter is a big franchise, Monster Hunter World was a really good game that brought MH to new heights. This time they can go even further. Also, it's Capcom, one of the most present publishers in TGA GOTY nomineers, in recent years.

Death Stranding 2

The first Death Stranding was pretty divisive, with some people praising it and some others defining the game as a not so cohesive experience. The sequel can hit all the boxes this time, and we can expect no less from Kojima than a relevant game nonetheless.

Fable

Playground Games already makes excellent games in the Forza Horizon series and now it's gonna enter the action-RPG realm with the Fable reboot. I think we can expect a really good entry in the series.

Metroid Prime 4

Metroid Prime is of the one best games ever made, as the franchise overall. Retro Studios is one of the top tier developers out there, and we can only expect this to be one of 2025 highlights.

New 3D Mario

*This one is not confirmed but very, very likely to be released on 2025, as Switch 2 will be released on 2025 and it should release at the console launch or at least in the same year.

We don't really have much to explain, it's Nintendo and it's 3D Mario. To put some context, Super Mario Odyssey (last 3D Mario) could have been easily the 2017 GOTY if not for Nintendo's own competitor, Zelda BOTW. Some think 3D Mario can have its BOTW moment this time, going open world.

That's the games that I currently see having the biggest chances of facing GTA VI, but the list goes on. There's also unnanounced games and possible indie hits.

That being said, do you see another game winning the TGA award next year or do you think it's a lock for GTA VI?

First impressions of Monster Hunter Wilds are excellent, so it might be a contender.
But who's voting for GOTY anyway?

I'll make the claim. If GTA VI releases in 2025 it will be Game of the Year in terms of revenue.

Unless there's some major unannounced blockbuster still in store, it probably has the best chance, sure. GTAV didn't exactly get universal GOTY accolades, but that's cuz The Last Of Us also came out that year and was a massive deal.

That said, I very much doubt it'll be my GOTY. I like GTA quite a bit, but some games coming out next year that I reckon could/will be higher up my list are:

Doom: The Dark Ages - I was a little tepid on it as a first impression, but learning a bit more about their intentions, I think I'm pretty hyped again. And Hugo Martin and the team have easily earned any benefit of the doubt that they know how to make an amazing FPS campaign.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 - Recently played the first and absolutely adored it. A very unique experience and often not talked about with it is its stellar writing and great characters. Henry is somehow one of the more likeable RPG protagonists in years. And it manages to buck the notion that 'realism isn't fun' when it comes to its environmental design and mechanics and whatnot. Devs seem to have great priorities in terms of making a super memorable experience.

Borderlands 4 - I'm just a sucker for these games. Loot RPG but in FPS form with a very unique style and tons of enemy variety and creative weapons and fussing over loot - it's just something that suits me really well.

Anno 117 - Anno is secretly the king of the city builder strategy genre nowadays. 1800 was just amazing and probably one of the most overlooked top tier games of last generation. So I'm really looking forward to this.

Promising games too. Although only Doom and Borderlands have real chances to be nominated, IMO.

My gut feeling says that the "Last of Us" to GTA this time can be the next 3D Mario. I think Nintendo can go all in and make this a big of a banger as BOTW was to make Switch 2 look like a big deal.

That's pretty optimistic. lol I'd love to see it, but I'm not sure it's possible for any 3d platformer to really take the industry by storm the same way GTA or TLOU can these days. Not impossible I guess, and Nintendo can surprise, but it'd really have to be a revelation for the genre.
