Xenon or CELL..

..or both? ;)
A couple of new interesting patents show something that may be related to CELL-PPE and Xenon CPU.

Power throttling method and apparatus
Just look at the first picture, we see a blocks diagram that could resemble the PPE.

Multithreading recycle and dispatch mechanism
system and method is provided for improving throughput of an in-order multithreading processor.
[EDIT] Obviously, as it already happened a lot if times, in a few hours these patents will appear on Team Xbox (or some other site) as they found it first without giving credit to anyone nor linking this site :rolleyes:

i think m$ dont use a 2 way,inorder cpu
2 G5 with 8 way,and OOO faster than 4 PPE

Not for vector ops per cycle...

2 G5s ~ 2*VMX ~ 16 Flops per cycle

4 beafed up Xe PPE's ~ 4*VMX ~ 32 Flops per cycle.

peak performance not equal real performace,
g5 can to run 8 instructions/cycle with MT , PPe only 2 instructions/cycle

Yes but now you're not being consistent...

2*G5~ 16 instructions per cycle

4*PPE~ 8 instructions per cycle

Obviously they have their pros and cons but I was comparing vector Flops per cycle...and this is why CELL kicks ass with it's vector performace.

Doesn't the leaked Xenon document say its CPU is 2-issue?

It's says dual-issue,

...
The Xenon CPU is a custom processor based on PowerPC technology. The CPU includes three independent processors (cores) on a single die. Each core runs at 3.5+ GHz. The Xenon CPU can issue two instructions per clock cycle per core. At peak performance, Xenon can issue 21 billion instructions per second.

Anyone have performance numbers for the PPE alone?

1 PPE being 2 way SMT, dual-issue ~ VMX + FPU ~ 8+2 ~ 10 Flops per cycle

The VMX can do FMADD but I'm assuming the FPU can do an FMADD also, i.e. FMADD ~ 2 Flops per cycle.

read it :)
http://www.powermax.com/pdf/G5_WP.pdf

Uhg...15 pages...I'm lazy! :)

Quick questions,

G5 = 1*VMX + 2*FPU ?

PPE = 1*VMX + 1*FPU ?

Can FPUs in both G5 and PPE do FMADD?

G5= 2 VMX+2FPU
PPE=1VMX+1FPU

G5 has 2 VMX units! :oops:

This is a single G5 core, right? Now I have to read that! <shakes fist> :)

<shakes fist even harder>

That's BS! :p

Check the diagram on page 8, it clearly shows 1 VMX unit! So,

G5 = 1*VMX + 2*FPU

1 VMX unit but with dualpipeline

That's still 1 VMX unit and NOT 2 VMX units.

How do you know that VMX unit in the G5 is different to the VMX unit in the PPE? And the VMX unit is still ~ 8 Flops per cycle right?

i dont know , G5 too complicated, i mean G5's VMX up to 12 or 16 flops/cycle
