Xbox360: Splitting the userbase at launch?

How about some opinions from folks (and hopefully devs) about the repercussions of MS seemingly splitting the userbase featurewise at lauch with no standard HDD? What effect will it have and how will devs deal with some people having HDD's, and others not. How similar to the situation with the N64 expansion pack?

Explain how ff online and marvel mmorpg will run with out a hardrive ?

Not to mention Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Did not the devs make a big fuss about how they couldn't make it without a hard-drive?

Will other devs compromise? Faster load times optional if you have a HD?

I wonder how xbox live patching will/won't work now.

As if xbox live devs needed less incentive to fix buggy games and release new maps/content.

This is a big mistake for many reasons. But mostly because it sends xbox live back into the ps2 era.

Not forgetting later versions on Xbox360 will be getting a HD-DVD

Xbox's with HDD standard DVD drive. Xbox's with HDD and HD-DVD drive.
Xbox's with no HDD standard DVD drive. Xbox's with no HDD and HD-DVD drive.

Looks messy already.

I think some games are going to have a needs harddrive icon on the back of the box and everyone is going to be forced to by one if they want to play certain games, if they were going to go this route though I would have rather not had an option for a memory card, considering it's a small removable drive and how much storage space and functionablity you get compared to a memory card, it seems like it makes more sense to me

Is it confirmed that their getting HD-DVD? If they ARE releasing a HD-DVD version after the 2 different SKUs that are being released now...then i'll just have to repeat what you said..it looks very messy...ok I added very..but still.

By doing that they will clutter the install base and you'll have people getting confused over what is what...I mean..parents don't even look at game ratings for their children...whats going to happen if you've got 3 flavors of the 360 floating around?

I'm also really curious about this. Wasn't the rumor a couple months back that Bethesda was dropping PS3 support because there wasn't a HD built in by default? I'm curious to see what they do now.

For crying out loud, why don't they at least drop the price opf the HDD to a more reasonable level so it makes a memory card a non-option.

Damn greed. They could easily kill 2 birds here, offer the HDD for $50, pay for their manufacturing costs + 100% profit, and STILL have HDD basically standard across the console.

But noooo...some giant douche decided that 300% profit was more like it....
(assuming their HDD costs them ~$25 to produce)

Now you have a HDD that is a major purchase, $100 = 2 games, in canada it's more like $130 and that's a lot of cash to spend on a freakin memory card. BAH.

With the hard drive being non standard and necessary for Live!, along with the headset being extra you better get a year or more of live gold free if you buy the hard drive.

the HDD is not necessary for live, a Memory unit, or HDD is though.

It looks as though, even after spending $400USD for the premium bundle + games + taxes, you still need to buy a xbox live account.

Hopefully they'll carry on the whole 3 months free thing with games, because we aren't made of money MS!

What about Backward compatibility does it need Hdd or is Memory unit enough ?

Maybe this explains WHY Vanguard isn't coming out on Xbox360 either...

All you need it a large memory card for MMORPG's. You don't need a complete hard dirve.

That would be a damn large MC!

Exactly. We still need to upgrade for the Xbox Live Gold membership....they should have at least put the Gold membership in the premium version than the Silver one IMO.
