Xbox live family plan this Nov $99.99

Just about to post this. Thanks.

Major Nelson posted the details below. He alos plans to answer a lot of questions on his blog & podcast.

  • Up to four individual Xbox LIVE Gold memberships for the price of two – (US) $99.99.
  • Family Center – a single, easy to use, destination for Family Settings and account management, accessible on the Xbox dashboard and on Xbox.com.
  • The primary account member has the ability to purchase and dispense Microsoft Points to other Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack members.
  • Activity monitoring reports viewable on Xbox.com to help encourage discussions about safer more balanced gaming and entertainment habits.
  • Simplified billing that applies all purchase charges to the primary account holder’s billing account and the ability to authorize purchases, helping to manage the family’s entertainment budget.
  • Exclusive family content and discounts.

I like it. Wife wants a Gold account, but she only uses whenever I pick up a 48hr trial subscription. The son got a 3 month Gold account a couple of weeks ago when they ran that special for $10 and a free month. $10 for 4 month is a steal. But $100 for a year for 4 accounts? Definitely jump on that. Good thing they announced it now. Now I don't have to buy another subscription until this comes out in November.

They also announced new family settings to go along with this...

  • Family Programming that removes all mature games, movies, and content from the dashboard, based on ESRB, Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings and the TV Parental Guidelines system . Family Programming is password protected, and easy to turn on and off for each member. (Compatible with international ratings systems.)
  • Title exceptions – the ability to allow your family members to play specific games above the console’s designated ESRB rating if you deem appropriate. (Compatible with international ratings systems.)
  • Intelligent default settings for child, teen, and adult profiles. Xbox will automatically assign default privacy and activity settings for each member that can later be individually customized.
  • Family Settings are displayed prominently in the MyXbox channel. Current tools include the Family Timer, which allows you to control the amount of time - either daily or weekly - your children may use the console.

it's great but...

I have one machine, it can only be on once at any one time - why do I need to pay twice?

huh? This allows a family of four to all have their own gamertag, gold membership & share Microsoft Points. They haven't announced what this means for current members, or multiple systems etc.

I have always hated that one subscription is for one GT only, and not for all using the console...That's the reason I and my bro don't pay to have Live
I certainly don't like the direction this is going

Right now you can get xbox live for 1 month for $1. Might want to check that out under her account on the dash board. If you send me your email in pm I will send u the email i got if you dont find it on the dash

I like this even more than Kinect. I can finally just buy 12000 points or so and dole them out how I want and now we can all actually play 1 vs 100 as ourselves instead of (1). The biggest problem with using ratings though doesn't get answered (not that I necessarily believe it is up to MSFT to fix), but the NR can range anywhere from what I feel is a G to an MA. I wish there was some back-end intelligent way that I could tell the box, THIS NR tv show is ok but THAT one is not. Maybe something akin to how Netflix determines "Movies You'll Love".

But this is finally what I have been asking for since this gens inception.

Already checked it out. Didn't consider it since it automatically renews to the month-to-month plan after the month is over. That runs $8/month.

If for instance you have 3 Xbox 360s and 4 Xbox Live accounts for arguments sake. Does that mean that Xbox Live Arcade content is available to all accounts at the same time? Also further to that can you play say Castle Crashers on two of the Xbox 360s with one purchase together?

Gizmodo has an update...

Gizmodo said:
Update: We just heard from Microsoft that you could split these four accounts across consoles, so long as they were all in the same country. To do so, first the second, third and fourth accounts need to be added to the same console as the primary account holder. After they are activated onto the Family Pack, they can recover that account onto a different console.

Sounds like you might be able to set this in the dashboard without buying the subscription, for those that already have gamertags & subscriptions.

MS just needs to make live free. Xbox live fees I think are one of the main reasons why they sell neck and neck or just a little more than sony. With no live fees, the xbox would probably sell at a 2 to 1 ratio.

That's a stupid business move. Without XBLive subscriptions, MS needs to charge significantly more for each console and game sold.

My point. Look, I already purchase Gold. If I am not on with my avatar/GT my wife should be able to use all the Gold features with her avatar/GT.

We really are not just paying to play online, we are paying for each individual person to play online. Which is simply lame.

And this isn't an amazing deal. I just got a 12 month Live Gold card for $29 with free shipping from NewEgg. Dell and Amazon frequently have sales as well. I pay Gold fees because it is the console I own and the best online console experience and at $3/mo it isn't steep. But there is a principle involved and P2P gaming fees + them all tied to one GT/Avatar is stupid from a consumer angle.

It works though because Sony had online with the PS2 and PSN on the PS3 still lags far behind Live and Wii online is a joke.

Actually your paying to play online along with server costs for hosting messages and achivements and dlc tracking.

The msrp for 12 months single person subscription is $50 . This msrp is $100 for 4 people. Buying MSRP 12 months single person for a family of 4 would cost $200, this costs $100.

The cards will become discounted shortly after release just like the live 12 month cards. Even at your reduced price your looking at $20 savings when buying the family card at msrp prices.

Live is even a good service whe ncompared to pc games.

This is the one thing about live that I think sucks great big monkey nuts.

I think it's great to have paid accounts for multiplayer etc as it's a user-pays system, but it's not use-pays enough.

At the moment, I pay the same for those servers as everyone else, but I bet I use them a lot less. So why should I have to pay for it all again when my wife or three kids want to get on there. In total I bet we still use it much less than most individuals here for instance, so why should I have to pay 5 times as much for the pleasure?

Perhaps accounts should be free and they should be charging by time or bandwidth used. I know that wont happen and I understand why, but it just grinds my gears.
