Xbox 360 Wireless Troubles

So I finally caved, and purchased one of those ripoff official Wireless adapters Microsoft forces you to buy if you want to go online with with your 360 wire free. The only problem is that my Xbox does not seem to recognize the fact that the Wireless adapter is connected to my console. The WiFi adapter has a solid red light which indicates that it is ready to be told which network to connect to, however when I go into the network settings I cannot select the Wireless Mode option as it is grayed out. I have tried unplugging it, and plugging it into the different USB ports, but none of that seems to work.

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can fix this I would be thankful.

May simply be a defective unit. I never had any of these issues when I installed the wireless adapter (it is a damn rip-off).

I take it you have your ethernet cable unplugged??

Isn't there a wizard that you need to run called "Windows connect now"?

Yeah, but I lost my USB thumb drive which is needed to run the setup. It does not really matter anyway, I should be able to select the Wireless Mode option in the network settings menu under the system blade. As I said earlier, according to the light on the Microsoft WiFi device it is waiting for me to select a WiFi network to connect to, however the Xbox 360 seems to disagree indicating that n WiFi device is connected.

Well, I have been doing some reading, and I have come to the conclusion that this may actually be a problem with the 360 rather than the WiFi adapter. In the cases I read online, each of the people tried multiple WiFi adapters with no change in the ability to connect to a WiFi network. If I find out that I have to return my 360 to Microsoft I am going to get rid of my 360 and get a Playstation 3. I have already had to return it once for RROD, which is so fucking ridiculous, and now I find out that something is prevent my 360 from registering my WiFi device. Tomorrow I will return the WiFi adapter to Futureshop in hopes that it is simply a faulty device, if not I am going to be fucking pissed off.

It's easy, in fact so easy, to fix the problem. Martin Eddy explained it beautifully. The red light indicates that the wireless adapter is working fine but it's not "connected" to a wireless LAN.

It happened to me once and I learned from that experience. I didn't know what was going on at first.

Hmm... I just set mine up this weekend, and it was just about the easiest wireless network connection I've ever done.

I think what is being said previously is correct. The light means that your network adapter is working correctly.

The fact that you can't connect to a wireless network is because you haven't told it which network to connect to or given it the proper password.

Maybe if you told us the type of wireless router you are using to create the network and some of the network settings, we'd be able to help you?

Is this a pre-existing wireless network that works with other computers in your house?

Maybe I did not explain myself clearly enough in my first post, but the problem I was having was that I could not select the Wireless Mode options in the System Blade under network settings. It does not matter now, I just purchased 15.2m of Ethernet cable, and ran it under my floor from my router to my TV.

How much does that thing cost? You can get a Netgear print server that acts as a wired-to-wireless adapter for about $70 on Newegg and it supports WPA-PSK too.

Could have been me, IQ. At work I tend to skim and don't have the 360 in front of me to trouble shoot.

Mize, the adapter costs $99. It's far from the price gouging you'd expect from reading the comments about it, but it is more expensive than it really 'should' be.

Yeah, less of a gouge than the proprietary hard drive and I wouldn't have thought of the $70 print server solution if I didn't have one lying around :)

I think I have the uplink on B/G/N since my PSP uses B, the Netgear G and my kids' iMac N :). Anyway, I've never tried to stream two movies at a time so I can't say...

It doesn't sound like the issue here, but one thing to remember is if you have MAC address filtering enabled you need to add the Xbox 360's MAC. This oversight cost me a bit of time when I got my replacement Xbox.
