Xbox 360 hard drive.

There's no reason to have 7GB for caching, but these figures are so far from only one person, but as people get home from work, can play around with their machines, and can report more info we'll have better, more verifiable information.

Think of the poor Japanese Xbox360's though who will have FFXI pre-installed which, if it's anything like the PS2 or PC version, will take up at least a 5GB+ install on the harddrive (obviously deletable though, but still, could be daunting to boot it up for the first time and see you only have like 2GB free!!!)

That's strange. MS has done some wierd stuff before, like all the later XBOX's had 10GB HDD however they only unlocked 8GB, and you actually had to have your dashboard create an extra 2GB partition on bootup to enable the extra space.

Is it possible it's 7GB 'reserved' for BC? it still makes no sense as the profiles are only supposed to be ~5mb, and that would be enough space for over 1400 games(and xbox only has ~1100 i think)

that is if you had an modded xbox sir. not that MS wanted to give you an extra 10g

I'm just saying they;ve done wierd stuff in the past. Why would you NOT enable an extra 2GB of space that its just sitting there?

I don't really believe this though, we'll have to get confirmation and dig a little deeper, i wonder what the word is over at xbox-scene...

Out of the box it's only Halo and Halo2. You have to download patches to get the rest (available from launch).

Ahhh, I never got that snippet. I thought it was all supported out the box. So what the hell is that 7GB dead zone  . Guess we'll have to wait until more Canadians fidget around with the 360...though they'll probably be to busy playing the games.

Someone on GAF basically stated that the Emulator itself is only 35MB. I asked if he knew what the 6.9GB space is being take up by. I'll relay it back when he replies.

He's an official MS rep too, so that can basically be taken as fact, the emulator is only ~35MB.

Hmmmmmmm....

That fact that he came in, said the Emulator is 35MB and didn't elaborate into anything else is very telling. So its not wasted space, there is a purpose and I have a feeling we'll be finding out very soon.

Xbox cache partitions are 750MB each (3x). Some games use 2 partitions (Halo2, Chaos Theory). It wouldn't be surprising if everything is used for cache, and dont forget that an HDD labeled "20GB" often means 19GB of usable space.

No one will have to download all of the b/c software. Likely when you put a game in the 360 will check for the binaries and if they aren't there it will download it for you. So I doubt that the 7GB is non-negotiable. It's probably dynamically allocated.

How many people even have their 8 GB close to full.

How many game demo's have ever been download on XBOX1?

You make a good point, however there wasn't much to DO with the HDD last gen, if you weren't a modder, then it was basically save games and rip audio. Now there's downloadable trailers, demo's, add-on packs etc

After thinking about it some, I'm thinking the 7GB is probably not one partition, but instead the 7GB is set up exactly the same way as the original Xbox. There's probably the 3 750MB cache partitions and whatever other partitions are necessary to place your save games. Think about it. The original Xbox 1 games are going to be expecting the same drive letters and partitions and if they're not there, then the games could break. In essence this means that the hard drive gives Xbox and Xbox 360 games their own space and they don't share any of it. I understand why Microsoft did this and if you think about it, there's probably no other way around it either. Good thing the drive is removable and expandable.

Hmm so 7 gigs for cache and game saves ?

I dunon

Way i figure it is this

1 gig gone with formating

19gigs left

2 gigs for caching

17 gigs let

Where does the rest go ?

I can't see them using more than 2 gigs ofr caching .

But couldn't that be handled by emulation? If the code request hdisk(0) partition, the emulator can simply redirect that to another directory?

There's a C drive on XBOX1 that holds all the system files. D is the DVD. Then there's the E drive that holds game saves and stuff. Then there's X,Y and Z partitions that are 750mb each for cache.

I still don't see why it needs more than 2GB.

Maybe someone likes to play more than 3 games at a time?

Frankly I'm somewhat surprised of the rumor of a 7GB non-removable partition on an already tiny harddrive. Hopefully it's just bogus, because I'd prefer to simply dedicate most/all of the drive for caching to avoid waiting for a sluggish DVDROM to load games. Perhaps save some space for future updates/addons, if it's looking like those are going to be popular, but mostly I'd just prefer if MS didn't divide everything up so much in tiny fixed little boxes. Let the user decide how to utilize the space, thanks. They can set minimum default parameters for the noobs, but other than that I prefer not having my preferences dictated by redmond.

I think they had to achieve BC with Xbox Live in Xbox 1, which meant they had to emulate all the Xbox 1 HDD space. MS support wouldn't like to hear whiners who use more than 12GB on their disk with BC malfunction.

As you can't store movies in Xbox 360 HDD and only streaming works, 13GB will be enough for most users.

Then the oldest cache gets deleted, and next time you play that game you have a long first load time. Worked pretty good for the last 4 years.

My opinion? It's a 20GB HDD so probably 18.x GB is available. There is probably ~4GB for HDD caching, a few hundred MB for system files, and perhaps some reserved space for XBOX1 cache area ~1.5GB. Something like that...
