Would GTA V be possible on Wii U?

Ok, the impression I'm getting from the technical specs of the Wii U so far are that the machine has a better graphics card than the PS3/Xbox 360 but Nintendo actually put a worse CPU in there which is quite a feat in itself considering the hardware in those two machines is at least 7 years outdated now and this was supposed Nintendo's bid to recapture some of the core gamer market.

Now the question is, would the Wii U be able to handle one of the most technically demanding games (I presume) shortly to be released without serious quality cutting? It's well known that GTA games are demanding on both CPU and GPU as the poorly optimised PC port of GTAIV demonstrates but they have a lot of physics going on in the game that would show up the shortcomings of a weak cpu, as some developers who have worked on the Wii U have bemoaned.

It would work, though it's just a matter of how much dumbing-down would need to be done.

Of course, this would need an amount of man-hours that no 3rd party publisher/editor is willing to spend for the Wii U.

If a more or less uncompromised port is doable, why not? More money for Rockstar, why would they want to pass on that? Unless they believe that everyone bought a WiiU only for Mario and Zelda.

Ah yes, a world where porting a game to a console has no cost associated with it at all.

Oh yeah, of course there is cost plus opportunity cost, but early adopters are usually amongst the biggest spenders so there is money to be made there.

Tell that to the companies that are canceling Wii U ports of XBox 360 and PS3 games :/

That's not what the current market conditions indicate. The Wii U is a failure and money sink for third party publishers.

I think this can be summarily answered with a strong "maybe."
I think dagamer actually summed it up best with, "Possible? Sure. Going to happen? No.".

It could physically be done in some form or another, but there is no profit whatsoever to be made by doing so...so it ain't gonna happen.

I think of Force Unleashed for Wii. The visuals were badly compromised but it was probably made because Wii was so incredibly popular at the time. It also had the special lightsaber duel mode for Wii and the motion controls were really driving excitement back then. Wii U doesn't have the popularity or any special appeal.

The entirety of the market for GTA is on Sony/Microsoft systems + PC. It would cost money to do a port however it likely wouldn't expand the number of people who could buy it enough to make it worthwhile. Could they have done it with absolutely no effort they possibly might have considered it. So yes if the Wii U was significantly more powerful enough for them to simply drop it in they might be talking about it right now.

The tablet introduces a cost to any port regardless of the actual technical ability of the rest of the machine. But even if you could just compile the code and ship it there are other costs, marketing inventory management etc etc etc.
It simply isn't free to ship anything and when you look at the sales of hardcore targeted WiiU titles, it just doesn't make sense.

Very negative thread lol. Nintendo know they need Call of duty, Assassins creed and GTA on Wiiu to address the " Core Gamers ". I think GTA will be present in the same time as the other version. For the cost of the port, tablet feature, marketing, management, i can see Nintendo support them. As for the weak cpu what are making GTA more difficult to port than Nfs most wanted, Assassins creed 3, Lego city...

Along the vein of technically possible, but requiring the correct market conditions, Nintendo probably has 5-6 months to improve the later. I don't think there's really an expectation that there is going to be a surprise Wii U version that will launch in September alongside the 360/PS3 versions. However, given GTA's history, the PC version will come ~8 months after the current-gen console versions and I expect the next-gen XBox/PS4 versions will come alongside the PC version. Development on the PC/next-gen XBox/PS4 ports won't probably kick into high gear until after the 360/PS3 versions ship. So Nintendo likely has until then to demonstrate improved, sustainable console and game sales momentum to justify the Wii U being part of the second wave of GTA V releases.

In regards to the GamePad support adding porting costs, with the next-gen XBox and PS4 also touting second screen implementations, if second screen interests Rockstar creatively and is something they want to dabble in anyways then the costs would be shared by all 8th gen consoles rather than the Wii U exclusively.

Technically the ps360 and wiiu versions of Assassins creed 3, Lego Batman 2 / city undercover, Nfs most wanted are on par. This is 3 open world game and i dont see why suddently the wiiu will struggle for gta5 based on this.

If Rockstar wait for market conditions and certainly they are, no GTA or other games will come from them, never lol. This is why i am saying Nintendo have to support the game. Cost of the port + tablet feature + wiiu exclusive feature... GTA is a big seller, like Call of duty, Fifa... without this game Nintendo cant say " we target the core ".

And if you want to make an impact you dont arrive after the party lol, so the game need to arrive in the same time, here we see that they are trying to have GTA on wiiu since April 2011: http://www.01net.com/editorial/5317...tendo/&usg=ALkJrhhbG4UWBbTG1crdmi-Lfqy1FB9aVg

Sorry for the link in french, this is the same source that give us all the rumor behind the project coffee. We just have one more month to wait for e3, if there is nothing here, Nintendo can say goodbye to the " Core " gamers.
