Will Nvidia's GPU chup impress or dissappoint us at E3?

  • No, I think that it won't be up to par with what Next gen (ATI's GPU) is bringing us.

After all this CELL hype, you would think that Nvidia would be just as impressive and bring out a GPU to mett the great power of CELL (or the Ati's R500 GPU, which looks VERY impressive). Do you think Nvidia will bring the goods or will falter to ATi's best? Your thoughts here...

Will it impress or disappoint?
Weee-eell, I believe the answer to that question is a "yes".

Had enough with the stupid baseless speculation threads yet? ;)

erm, this poll is pretty silly, because:

Nvidia's GPU for Playstation3 will not even be finished in time for E3, so how can it impress us ?

Nvidia stated that they expect to have the silicon before the end of the year, which obviously means not by E3.

"I have every expectation that we will be able to see final production silicon later on in the year," Huang commented, following the announcement earlier this month that NVIDIA is collaborating with Sony on its next-generation console format.

Nvidia's PlayStation 3 GPU Finished by End of 2005

According to Internet reports, chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang told investment firm Morgan Stanelt this week that Nvidia's GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) for the PlayStation 3 will be completed by the end of 2005.

"I have every expectation that we will be able to see final production silicon later on in the year," Huang said. "This next generation architecture took several hundred people several years to build, but this specific implementation of that architecture should take about 50 engineers. It's something we're running full throttle on," he added.

Work on the PlayStation3’s Graphical Processing Unit is going well and should culminate in the finialised version of the nVidia built chip by the end of 2005 – according to nVidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang

now maybe at E3 we will see an unfinished, non-final Playstation3 with Nvidia's newest GPU (G70 ?) but not the actual PS3 GPU.

Impress is reall subjective and is determined by what you compare it to.

1) Current consoles?
2) Current PC GPUs?
3) X2 R500?
4) ATi/nVidia fall 2005 top offerings (R520/NV50 and their refreshes)?
5) ATi/nVidia fall 2005 midrange offerings?
6) ATi/nVidia spring/fall 2006 offerings (R600/SM 4.0 parts)?

How impressed we are will depend large on the baseline of comparison. If the PS3 launches in the US in fall 2006, I am pretty sure the top of the line GPUs by then will exceed the theoretical performance and have some important features that the PS3 GPU wont. But the PS3 GPU will be designed for the console, so certain numbers (fill rates, memory, etc...) are not meant to compete with desktop parts.

I think from a purpose perspective all the console GPUs will be impressive. Even if not in pure numbers, their tight integration and closed boxed design will result in games that overpower PC games on better HW for at least a couple years.

Hmm, I don't like either choice.
I don't think it will be an incredible monster, but I don't think it will fall short of ATI's part either.
I think it will be approximately equal to ATI's part, perhaps with more features but not more performance, but it will be released later since the PS3 will be.

Well ATI for the past few years has caught up with and in many ways surpassed Nvidia, atleast as far as their PC/laptop parts go. That still only translate into a minor difference at the end of the day, so I would only give a slight edge to ATI.
