I you can't afford to pay more than $150 for a console, how are you supposed to buy games?

Gaming is probably just not the appropriate hobby for you. Your time will be better spent elsewhere.

rent, buy used, trade in? He said he couldn't justify the price anyway, that's not the same as not being able to afford.

Not necessarily true!

He could snag a PS2/Xbox/GCN for uber cheap (under $50) and with the other $100 he could buy a dozen or two of the VERY BEST games from last gen. Heck, buy a PS2 and Xbox and get all the best games on each platform.

Yes, next gen gaming may be out of his reach, but gaming as a hobbie is still possible. There is something probably to be said about waiting until the end of a generation and getting the BEST of the BEST games, "Day 1" purchase with your console, which is cheap, a ton of quality periphrials, with an embarassment of games at your disposal.

A Wii/PS3/360, on the other hand... he is gonna have to wait with that budget. In a couple years (2010) I am sure $150 will snag a reliable used console and some games though.

You can easily get used X360s for that, PS3 seems to be in very high demand on the second hand market, atleast in norway (used prices are very very high on ps3, while x360 gets "dumped" also because the cheapest x360 is like $200 or something now)

I can't fathom why my simple question provokes so much antagonism in the form of users who are posting to this thread mainly to contradict me constantly. If you don't feel like being helpful, then just ignore the thread; simple, sound logic, and it'll help keep your blood pressure down low.

Thanks again to those who've replied with an earnest wish to help. I'll keep looking on eBay and Craigslist - can't think of anywhere else online to look at the moment.

bigsilly , go to your local gamestop and i'm sure someone will want to trade in a 360 at some point. I believe the 360 with no hardrive is $130 bucks right now. So just tell a guy that you will give him the $130 for it in cash

Ya there should be some place around that deals in used. There's only 2 or 3 EBs where I live but there's a dozen other places that deal in used. Heck maybe you'll even find one in a pawn shop.

Best place to go for cheap is pawn shops. Thing is you never know what you get. I have on ocassion scamed a few. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Hi!

I can't justify spending more than about $150 for a video game system.

I don't mind if it's used, I don't mind if it's a little broken (but still plays games) I don't mind if it comes without controllers or games or memory cards or the like.

I don't mind if it's banned from online play for whatever reason.

Basically, I just want to play some of the new games, but because the rental centers don't rent game systems anymore, I guess I've got to buy one - and I really couldn't justify it for more than about $150.

So, is there any chance? Any source? What do you guys think?

You asked what we think so get ready.

First of all I do not understand how you can not justify spending more than $150 for a video game system.

What is wrong with a video game system that costs over $150 specifically the current ones?

Are you aware of the millions and I believe billions of dollars in research and development that these "video game systems" go through in order to be made available to the end user, ie the potential buyer, ie you?

All three current "video game systems" actually cost alot of money to fabricate the separate components, then assemble them, then quality test them, then box them, then ship them... do you get the picture?

For a video game developer it also costs money, alot of money to program, direct, produce and in recent cases add voice acting work, music, etc it just adds up my friend, video games systems and games are serious business reguardless of someone calling it a kids toy, its an actual entertainment medium.

Then there is the fact that these consoles have multiple features like online modes, download services, DVD movie playback (X360, PS3), Blu Ray movie playback in PS3, downloadable or uploadable movie/video playback (X360, PS3), photo display, music playback, wireless, rechargeable controllers, compatability with mp3 players and more and more and more features included.

I understand that you claim to not mind if the console is missing controllers or games yet how can you play with a broken controller? are you going to keep dying or losing because the A or triangle button is stuck?

And if the console is broken, chances are that it won't last long as these are really state of the art technological devices and you are wanting the "current gen" right?

These things, these "video game consoles" just like anything else, be it a car, gasoline, a dvd player, an mp3 player, a number 5 meal, a girlfriend, etc costs money to get and maintain specially in reguards to a VGS since you do have to buy games or you will lose your mind to boredom.

I really need to know and please this is not to be taken as offensive or personal, but:

how old are you?

what is your source of income?

what bills do you pay?

what do you spend our money on besides video games?

Do you have a savings account at a bank?

Do you save money at all in a safe place?

I am sorry to say this but your opening remarks made me refuse to continue reading the rest of the thread as I normaly do because in my mind you devalued the current generation of "video game systems" and the price tag they carry and frankly if you cannot afford it you can always just pick up an older console like the PS2 or a portable like PSP and Nintendo DS that are still currently supported but are below the $150 dollar/currency you have as your limit.

As a matter of fact would you pay for gasoline if you had a car these days, would you go to the gas station and tell them you are only willing to pay $1.50 a gallon when the national average is $4.25?

I am sorry to say this but your opening remarks made me refuse to continue reading the rest of the thread...

But you did anyway and responded with a pretty caustic post that didn't have anything to do with helping the poster, and everything to do with undermining his value judgments. Those questions are way out of line also.

The thread is closed here - anyone with any actual interest in helping the OP rather than preaching, take it to PM.
