i am aware of the games having to support it, but technically and performance wise would it be possible for nintendo to add 720p output like microsoft did with the xbox 360?

Doesn't the Wii support component cables? If so you dont need to add any output, just firmware upgrade. Of course, this will be completely useless taking in mind the hardware

I dont' think the mere presence of a particular cable will allow HD out of any one particular device. Firmware update or not.

Doesn't the wii have just 1MB or maybe 2 of videoo memory? If so how on earth are you going to fit a HD screen into that small a space?
Peace.

A static 1280 x 720 JPEG ? :D

If it scans out can be from main memory, very easily using screen space partitioning. You may know it as "tiling", as seen on Dreamcast and X360 and most bullshot renders (many games can output an insane resolution frame dump for PR reasons)

If the hardware supports it, it would be fairly trivial to run the OS and things like the web browser cos any costs for tiling wouldn't hurt much for that kind of app i'd imagine.

The wii has 3mb of "texture" memory, whatever the hell that is and 24mb 1T-SRAM memory.

Not texture memory, but 2MB back buffer and 1MB texture cache. However since the front buffer is scanned from main memory, screen space partition should in theory be workable. However if the CRTC controller doesn't support video timings over 27MHz then you're screwed (despite memory, component cables, or any firmware tom foolery)... For all intensive porposes it's basically a GCN w/footnotes...

Even if Wii could output 720p what's the use? the hardware probably isnt fast enough anyway to run games at that resolution as its designed as a SD machine.

It would be nice to see a higher resolution in the Opera browser. Apart from that I can't see it happening.

The ps2 had 3 720p games - Madagascar, Sponge Bob Squarepants, Tokyo Bus Driver...oh and one 1080i game, Tourist Trophy...

Considering Wii's graphics so far are looking a bit stretched, would anyone want to dilute it's resources even further to get a higher resolution? Dithered 256 colour framebuffers?

There's no point to it, which is why Nintendo have snubbed it. For the browser it'd be nice, but the machine wasn't designed as a set-top web browser.

The scary thing is Wii could be so damn perfect in that role.. For some of the tasks for such a device anyway.

Nintendo just needs to add a decent music player channel (that plays CDs also) and a DVD player channel..which they say they're doing but I believe that when I see it..

Yiu have to buy remotes for PS3 and 360. Wii comes with one already. Vuideo quality is outstanding with component. It is very small and it looks wesome. And it draws fairly little power which is good for the environmentally conscious. Perfect!
Peace.

You do? Mine came with one. Is that only the premium SKU that has remote included?
Your what came with one?

A limited number of 360 premiums came with crippled remotes but that practice ended pretty quick as far as I know. I don't think MS delivers remotes with any 360s anymiore not when they can gouge their customers for a peripheral sale instead he he.

Sony sure as hell doesn't include it that I do know.

Peace.
