Im very annoyed atm, the downloading speed is dog slow atm.

Ive tried to download the 2.53 firmware update 10 times now, but it disconnects every time after downloading a few % . Tried downloading the GTA4 1.04 patch, does the same thing.

What is up? Why are things going to horribly slow (downloads are waaaaaay slow aswell)??

Not sure but if it uses the same servers as Home, that right there is an explanation, as especially in Europe Home is causing a lot of activity.

If it isn't, I did read that on the day that Home was released there were some PSN issues probably unrelated to Home. Maybe they haven't figured them out completely just yet.

Personally except on Thursday I haven't had any issues with PSN or downloading stuff from it.

For the Firmware update, you could try to get it using your PC as it is always also posted online and you can download it and put it on a USB stick and install from there.

Norway. I get 8mbit down from XBL, 10kb-100kb\s or less from PSN.

Usually it works fine (still horribly slow compared to xbl), but the last couple of days are just crazy, i get error messages all the time when trying to download the 2.53 firmware, (says it disconnects, but it has to be on their side, as my internet is perfectly stable for any other internet service).

(Also dunno why Sony insists of sending complete firmware updates instead of just patching, if they allready have bandwidth issues why the hell create extra problems for themselves??)

I'm sure there is a reason for complete firmwares instead of patches, 1 because it's easier to avoid problems that way.

If the download speeds are that big of an issue, why do you not just download them via the internet? It will almost always be significantly faster. Problem solved.

NA should be fast (I have been downloading stuff the entire night). Europe seems to be having problem right now. People are having difficulty entering Home as well.

I wouldn't be to sure that there is any real advantage in doing things this way, XBL just does patches, if complete firmware upgrades had any big gains, why wouldn't microsoft use it?

The biggest issue is PSN disconnecting the downloads thus i cannot patch\update games nor the firmware update, im usually not that annoyed by the slow as hell downloading speeds that PSN offers.

Why the hell should i have to download the updates from the internet? It should have fast enough speeds on the PS3, it shouldn't disconnect. Problem not solved!

Actually, I just downloaded 2.53 update from the be.playstation.com, dk.playstation.com and us.playstation.com. The average is about 5.5Mbps (completed in 23-30 seconds).

I have no idea why the route to your PS3 is congested though.

I downloaded the firmware update from the net aswell. 6mbit or so. Downloading from the net is not comparable anyhow.

However, from the PSN on the PS3, speeds are between 10kpbs - 100 kbps... It has nothing to do with my route to the server or anything, something is\was seriously wrong with PSN, seems to be faster now than it was earlier today thought. I could download the patches i needed at okay speeds without getting disconnected.

Earlier today, both me and several others got disconnects all the time, and combined with dog slow download speeds making it impossible to do update.

Well, sorry to hear that. Honestly it has everything to do with your location and distance from the server. Each and every person will have a different experience. For instance, for me, XBL is slower than PSN, not by a large margin as you experience, but a decent enough difference.

That said, it's not necessarily a lot of trouble to just download the update from a web browser and update that way.

BTW, I wish MS would do full firmware updates, I hate patches. I have had nothing but bad experiences with patches and software. Both XP and Vista have given me huge issues with service packs and updates, and my 360 had to be restored because of an update.

I won't even get into my terrible luck with PC software and patching, lol.

No its doesn't. (Obviously, location and distance matters for speed, but in this case this is not the limiting factor at all)

I can download @ 5-8mbit from any of the PSN Europe locations if i download from the web.. It has nothing to do with my location and distance to the server, something else was causing this. I imagine it has something to do with Home or something.

While it may not be a lot of trouble, i shouldn't have to do it. I should get proper speeds from my PS3.

there is no logical explanation on my side as to why my PS3 should download at slow speeds, seeing as i get 5x faster download speeds from any of the servers in europe (hell i get 5mbit from united states PSN). That being said, PSN seems faster today, still horribly slow, but not as bad as it was on saturday

You know what's worse than getting slow download speeds... downloading the MGS4 demo with slow download speeds, only to find out that it doesn't work.

Then downloading another demo, only to have the same problem. Then looking up the error code on the PS support site, which recommends you to 'reset default settings', which then forces you to reinput all your various audio, video, BD, network settings, only to find it still doesn't work. Then following the second support recommendation to backup your PS3 data and reformat the system. Which takes like an hour, when you're using a 4GB flashdrive.

Then finally redownloading the MGS4 demo again, and lo and behold.. it still doesn't work, and i've wasted a quarter of my internet bandwith. (the new firmware update does nothing as well)

Sony needs to fix PSN and the PS3 firmware. Take a leaf out of the 360, which despite being a MS product is stabler and has less bugs, the only problem i've had with it is the very occasional crash.

That's weird though, I've never had problems like that. Did you find any people on Neogaf with similar problems?

My download speeds are about my max speed from both PSN and Live Gold, so I have no complaints in that regard on either platform. Mind you I have a modest 500KB/s download speed.

vanquish, your HDD is probably faulty. I have never encountered a serious system software problem with PS3 since launch. And I ran the system 24/7 for 9 months straight. I don't think your experience is representative of everybody elses' in general.

PSN is fine for me so far too... except for game specific issues (early days of Socom).

It's a big jump to say the HDD is faulty. I've had my share of corrupt PSN downloads too, and I don't download too much.

You mean MGS4 download was corruped ? That's possible too. But if every try yields the same result, it's probably something else (or many more would have complained).

The largest number of issues I have seen of the PS3 in general tend to revolve around the launch 60GB with the red/yellow, hdd, disc issues and other abnormalities the rest of the units tend to not have as many issues. [random anecdote time] Everyone I personally know that has had a 60GB has had to have it serviced [/anecdote] I have never had any issues with my 40GB.

I have a 60Gb :D

Hopefully I have not jinxed it.

Ha... that would be no problem as a Bravia and a second PS3 is scheduled to arrive today. ^_^

Oh sh*t, jinxed another time
