Whats the deal with absynthe

Because it contains wormwood extract which is a poisonous substance. Like many poisons, in low dosage, it is hallucinagenic. It takes a long time for your body to get rid of wormwood, hence, if you drink it once in a while, you'll be find, but if you drink multiple drinks over a short period, the poison will accumulate faster than your body can flush it, and may reach toxic levels.
I personally would stay away from it. Who knows what the long term affect of consumption is, and there are many famous cases of famous people getting f*cked up by it. There are easier and safer ways to get high.

well I don't plan on having more than a shot or two of it a year . IT will be like my weed habit. On my birthday and new years . I ordered a bottle of it . Figured I'd try it and if i don't like it i can just make it part of my collection along with johny walker blue label and a few other expensive bottles .
Why not drink turpentine. I hear it rots the brain the same way.
Its only legal I believe in the Tzech Republic, although diluted stuff is available in Spain. I had a glass of it once, and frankly its about as foul as drink as anything you could dream off.
I didn't feel anything in particular either, so my advice is to stick with tried and true alcoholic beverages.
The downside's are well documented, many great artists and literary people drank it frequently during the Romantic period through to the turn of the century. Many of them were subsequently institutionalized.

Absinthe is legal in loads of countries (it's never been illegal here), except some cap the alcohol limit and most regulate thujone content. Spain probably just do the latter - the Spanish bottle we have downstairs is 85%, urgh. You hear of gnarly, un-regulated crap from Eastern Europe all the time. :?

This is what i've ordered. Its the cheapest version i can find (about 35$ usd) I want to try it before i buy anyhting to expensive.
I drink everclear and 151 without flinching so I think i should be able to drink this .
Only thing is i'm reading about diffrent ways to drink this. Some envolve spoons and lighting up sugar in the spoon while pouring the drink over it .
What is the proper way to drink this ?

Lots of different ways of drinkning it, different places have different styles. Whatever suits you really.
Oh and your talking about someone who has done 10 shots of everclear.
One way of drinking Absinthe (as a tall drink) is this:
1. Pour your shot of Absinthe into a tall glass.
2. Take a teaspoon of sugar and dip it in the Absinthe.
3. Ignite said teaspoon of Absinthe-soaked sugar and let it burn for a few seconds.
4. Tip this sugar into the glass, add water and stir.
5. Drink the cloudy muck.
It still doesn't taste too clever, but then I'm not a fan of aniseed in the first place due to a bad experience at University involving a bottle of Ouzo!
Personally, I think Absinthe is just really another "macho" drink. A case of, "Hey, look how strong this stuff I'm drinking is!"

What r u guys talking about? I had 4 in a row (FOUR) and it was the best. I was kinda drunk but i never felt sick, which usually happens when i get drunk on beer. They might have been "lighter" shots, but still at least half of what was there was absynthe 70%. It's great, if u like drinking u'll love this

The drink is known to cause a deep melancholy in habitual users though. Or it was when that painting was done at least. Maybe now they filter out the more toxic impurities ..... but I've always thought the active ingredient was known to have the risk of that side-effect.

So i was right!
Seriously though, after those 4 shots i felt amazing, drunk but not sick... Very nice...
PS: Don't think of me as a drunken saddo, i dont drink THAT often... Hardly ever actually

I have a bottle of the stuff, bought on site in Prague. It's 70%. I find it if not tasty at least highly acceptable in small doses.
(And for the record: I only drink it in small doses (much like with all liquor) and not very often.)
In Sweden they also sell a 60% version but without the hallucinogenic stuff. And frankly, it tastes pretty much the same.
Edit: Corrected alcohol percentage.
