Weird rumor on proposed NV40 name

Now I've heard that The Inquirer is saying NV40 will be called GEFORCE FX 6900 which to me is a strange name. But I heard from what I would call a reliable source that NV's new card will follow in the naming scheme from a company that's no longer with us.....

Weird that what comes around goes around, hopefully the card won't have the same fate as the last card of that name if the rumor is true

FX 6000 might be a bad marketing name, too. I can see someone who's completely clueless at a Best Buy looking at a 5950 that costs $300 and a 6000 that costs $400-500 and drawing the wrong conclusions.

... Rampage, the once and future king?

D'oh, wasn't even thinking of that. Was thinking of the V5 6000, what with the latest FX's going 5800, 5900, 5950. I'd pay to see nVidia name the NV40 Ultra boards Rampage. :devilish:

The GeForce name is stale and must go. Too many bad connotations after this generation. But if they named the NV40 Rampage... hooooly crap. How many people would show up on forums claiming that it was the chip that 3dfx was going to release when NVIDIA bought them out? :D

Hell, I'd probably buy one just to have a card named Rampage. It's a throwback to the days when cards were named using the most absurd schemes possible. I loved it.

But Rampage was the chip's code name. It was going to be marketed as Specter 3200/6400/9600. But, yeah, Rampage would be a cool name.

Shush, you. If the NV40 is the Specter 9600, I could whisper sweet nothings and tell it how it's really a Rampge 4 and how it's my preciousss...

Wait. The NV40 can't be the Specter 9600. Oops. Oh well. Specter's a decent name, though. Just something new besides GeForce and Radeon...

My guess is it'll be GeForce FX/PCX 6x00. It won't be 6900 because that doesn't leave enough room for future refreshes to slot in above. It won't be 6000 because that doesn't leave room for low and mid range parts below.

NVidia 6900 Ultra - cause the situation's reversed or now we're on top!

- just imagine the piccys you could use!

Rampaging Spectre of Fevered Imaginations?

But more seriously, how about Nvidia FX6900 Ultra - Just drop the GeForce.

I dunno, the "GeForce" bit of their name still reminds me of their glory days...it's the "FX" moniker I think they aught to get rid of!

Well, to be honest, after the last couple of years it could be argued that they might want to change the name "Nvidia."

Well, they renamed their drivers as well, so they might be considering a line change at this point. (Though granted they changed their drivers to sound closer to "GeForce." Heh...) It would differentiate them, though, and if they could come up with a cool enough name...

How about the Optimizer? ;)

"Slipstream" sounds like a sex position (that could be the porno being shown on TV making me think that though... )

I'm waiting for someone to use "Eclipse", a cooler name there is not

We used to call our own custom-built PCs where I work "Eclipse" - Do I get a cookie? :D

As for 'slipstream', it reminds me of Service Packs, so that definitely isn't a good thing. :p
