Top overhaul for cars

Generally speaking, what kind of performance improvements (percentages) can I expect for a car that has done 250,000 km over the last 15 years?

Do you mean what can you add/change to improve performance or how does 250K mileage do to a car's performance?

If it's the first we'd need more info about the specific car, if it's the latter they generally tend to go a bit downhill.

I'm just asking what kind of performance improvements can we generally expect as a result of a top overhaul on a 15-yo car (DOHC, 16-valve fuel-injection, 1839cc displacement... when new, it did 0-60 in 8.5 sec) that has done 250k km.

It would depend on the current state of the car, and exactly how much you will be overhauling. You should be able to get a car back to it's original performance if you have the time and the money.

My Audi 80 is at about 240000 km, at it's last MOT it needed:
New Windscreen (cracked),
New tyres (worn),
New exhaust.

For a 15 year old car I think this is pretty good going :)
