No, Tagrineth said the guy actually tried the games. Admit it, Square games usually have a touch of what I like to describe as "magic". Maybe it´s the production values, or the fantastic music, or memorable characters, but it´s there. That´s Square´s trademark, maybe that´s what attracts him to them (for example, I´ve known people who like Nintendo plattformers, and rarely like other plattformers, even after trying them. Also, when I tried Rayman 2 didn´t feel nowhere near as attracted to the game as when I tried Mario 64).
And face it, many RPGs outside of FF feature asstastic graphics, a crappy score, rough dialogue, a story that is nowhere near as prominent as it is in FFs.

I've tried to get him into other RPG's but he hates any and all non-Square RPG's. He's reluctant to try Xenosaga now, because the series started with Square but Saga is by NAMCO IIRC.

Side note, he knows he never likes non-Square RPG's at this point. That's why he's reluctant to get Xenosaga - he thinks he might like it because the series was started by Square, but he's worried that the fact that Namco made it might result in his not enjoying the game.

It isn't closed-mindedness, it's conscious spending.

Yes but you said he hates any and all non0square rpgs .... which basicly makes him biased to that one company . I'm a huge fan of ati and almost allways buy thier cards but i own a geforce 4 4600 to try it . I'm not a sony fan but i bought a ps2 and games to try it and see if i could like it . He seems to have made up his mind and will now never give anything a chance even if he "trys" it . You can be the smartest person in the world and still be biased .

Yes but as i said he may not be allowing himself to enjoy it and it may not be a thing he can control it .
