The window of opportunity for the PS3 to be compelling as a Hi-Def Media player?

I guess central to my original question is at what point did DVD sales take off? Was it when they fell below $300, $250 or $200 and how long till we can expect the next gen HD players to reach that point?

I remember around 2000, there was a lot of publicity about Digital Video Disc and then Digital Versatile Disc.

What helped a lot was those dot com deals, like 3 DVDs for a buck or deducting $200 from a DVD player, making the effective price like $150.

Also think PS2 made a difference, even in this country. For awhile, PS2 was the most popular DVD player and there were DVD editions marketed towards the PS2, like FF The Spirits Within movie.

Any facts/charts? FF was "tied in" because of FF on the PS2. Name another movie that was "related" in any way to the PS2 that wasn't part of the PS2 advertising campaign.

I don't know why I remember this, but I could have sworn that FF:TSW was supposed to have a scene in it that could have been rendered on the PS2 in "real-time". I distinctly remember being dissapointed that the movie DVD didn't ship with that kind of functionality.

EDIT: Looked at the DVD. It has a feature called Final Fantasy Shuffle. I didn't bother putting it in the DVD player for testing so I can't comment on what its limitations were.
