The Wind Waker - Got Impressions?

I just tried out the latest title in the Zelda series for the first time.. and I didn't get anywhere. :) (got the classic tunic then saved it) I did get a good look at the quasi cel-shaded graphics and got a good taste of the controls and audio.

So far, I'd say it's pretty good. The cel-shading has its ups and downs (some things look fantastic in Link's tiny village, other things look not so good) but I'd have to say that playing the game reinforced my opinion that EAD made the right choice.

The music is classic Zelda, more reminiscent of OOT than LTTP or earlier quests. Audio is wacky.. people sound funny (lots of funky screams and what sound like Japanese words..) but the environment (as well as Link himself) sounds about right.

Controls are great.. basically just OOT with a much more flexible camera.

Has anybody else started playing yet?

Just beat Rayman 3 (great, great game in it's own right btw) and have just been so impressed by the Gamecube lately. Now Zelda and WOW! Huge Ass worlds. Beautiful levels. Classic Zelda all the way in gameplay. Familiar yet fresh too. Must go play!

My local news showed ppl camping out at BB and EB. Ha already got mine.

as i've played the jap version till the end i give it a 9.8 ... the best game of this gen on any system.

I've since played more and it gets better and better.. although I thought the initial "dungeon" (Forsaken Fortress) was kinda shallow. It's probably akin to Hyrule Castle in LTTP, right JVD? I doubt that they'd make a full-fledged dungeon that easy. :)

Oh trust me. By the end of the game you will be complaining about how hard it is. The firt dungen is allways a lets make this easy so you nkow what your doing. Same goes for all games.

It's a fu$@ing Rembrandt.. thats all I go to say about this game. Incredible!

I've never been whored out like this. My family hates me right now.

family ? Heh i'm at college but my gf doesn't see me ... I think i might have turned down sex while playing this . Wait a second .... gotta go

I just did a 6 hour binge on it and I'm only a little ways through the second dungeon (the forest one). I think it's great. it's basically the same controls as OoT except you can sidestep and crawl, the throwing/dropping/moving/climbing has been improved to. I do not like the music playing though, they should have stuck with an instrument and not have made you keep beat. It would also have been nice to change the buttons for the music playing, it's difficult with the C-Stick. Another complaint I have is the sound, for instance that strange sound for when you crawl, there's no reason for that. I also don't like the menu as much.

On the good side, I love the graphics although they could have been a little more rounded I also love the dungeon lay outs so far, they don't really seem like dungeons. The sailing and just the act of going from one island to another is great, there just seems lik there is a lot to do in this game.

As for now I must sleep, I might write some more tomorrow.

that sucks, Luckily, my GF has her own GC and got her own copy, I have only had an hours worth of time to play so far, so she is the one doing all the playing, so she cant get mad at me.

JVD: It isn't really a full-fledged dungeon though, right? You don't get a Heart Piece for beating it, and it's as short as hell. Maybe "easy" wasn't the right term.. :) (although it is rather easy) I'm just saying.. I heard that there's around 6 dungeons in this game.. and I hope that Forsaken Fortress wasn't one of 6. :D

BTW, I got even further and my enjoyment increases with every hour of gameplay.

Counting that as a dungen and well i think you'd have to count about 15 dungens ... The game doesn't really start till you get your boat.

I'm just wondering, does anybody see these columns of light lines over their screen in dark areas? I see it on mine, and it gets pretty annoying. I know my cables are fine since no other GC game exhibits this.

I've spent only about an hour with my copy so far. It's very... bright :D

Actually it looks great running in progressive scan. Crisp, colorful and smooth... image quality is excellent. As for the gameplay itself, seems a lot like Ocarina of Time. Feels a lot smoother as far as control, which is great.

The one thing I don't care for- Booger Boy? WTF? :p

I get this, in both light and dark areas. It's only noticeable when I go into first-person perspective though.

controls are just like OOT, but the gameplay is feeling very different to me, the fortress feels more like Splinter Cell than Zelda, which is cool, variety is nice.

Haven't noticed that, but I did notice something that looks like scanlines whenever there's fog... o_O Odd but not anything bad.

I'd say the world complexity looks about the same as OoT (polycount wise), which isn't a bad thing anyway :) but kinda weird in some aspects.

A poly count that low ?
I've seen the game in action, and although toon shading definetely makes triangle count hard to see, I would say it has more, something like twice.

Z:OoT was very low on poly count.

I think it's as many polys as Super Mario Sunshine.

Not released in here, so it's a guess from the video and demo I've seen this far.

what? are you being serious here? polycount the same as OOT? i somewhat doubt that... A LOT...

no doubt, did you see the guards in the fortress? they had some major detail, the modeled detail itself was impressive, down to the last tooth, and the animation of them is even more impressive( I like the way their lips flopped around while they walk)
