The official TGS 2006 thread...

Well lot's of very impressive footage from X360 games, many of which are clearly targeted to japanese gamers. It's going to be interesting to see whether MS will get the results. I honestly believe after seeing all the footage that have come from TGS that MS should get some foothold in Japan. I mean the machine is dirt cheap, lot's of games that should be right on the money. I quess it all boils down whether the japanese market will be willing to accept X360 as a viable choice. I certainly won't be blaming MS this time if Xbox still won't sell in Japan, this time the blame will be on the receiving end imho.

A wise woman once told me that if teh fish dont bite... nothing is wrong with the fish its the bait! I dont know if that wisdom can apply in this case...

My sense is that no matter what happens MS will be third in Japan. Lets say FF or DQ came to x360... if its not exclusive to x360 it wont matter. The perception of "power" and brand is already cemented. People will want the "better" version of FF or DQ which *obviously* is going to be on PS3.

*'s are for sarcasm :)

I agree with the first part of that statement, but maybe not the second. XB360 is cheap and showing some great looking titles, but it is going to have stiff competition. Even doing everything right, MS might just be totally overshadowed by Wii for example.

I don't think that's the proper question. Because the Wii's uniqueness will sell a certain number of consoles. The real question is whether or not the Wii can continue to sell consoles in the next 2-3 years, once its technical limitations have been fully exposed.

The second part of the question, of course, is that if the Wii is successful in moving units after its technical limitations are exposed, how will Nintendo fight the onslaught of patent violations its will face from both Sony and Microsoft who have superior technological units and copy their interface.

IMO, if Nintendo's strategy actually works (which I'm very skeptical of), will they have enough capital to fight and win the resulting patent infringments which will result from their demonstrating that the interface is more important than the power of the system.

Immersion was suing Sony for an entire generation. Even now, Immersion still hasn't seen a single penny from winning their lawsuits against Sony, and in the meantime, Sony won the last generation.. in part due to tech that they stole.

If MS or Sony comes out tomorrow with an identical interface to the Wii, the suit won't be settled before the battle for this entire generation has been long decided. Does Nintendo have the money to fight that long? Especially if their console sales fall to next to zero because the primary benefit of their console is the tech that is being stolen/copied?

Essentially.. Nintendo put themselves in a money war, whether they like it or not. They tried not to by deciding to not fight MS or S in terms of specs, and go for 'experience/interface' instead. But it'll take less than a year for S or MS to copy that tech and both S and MS own and have licensed enough patents to make the patent case a very complicated one.

I really don't see how a company launching with inferior tech can win this round. They'll either lose it in the market place, or they'll lose it through litigation by trying to defend their patent.

Oh I thought that was given and I didn't mean to imply that MS should win or come second in Japan, but there are many ways of finishing third, one way is to lose a meter, other is being lapped and then there is everything in between. If you do everything right you shouldn't be lapped imo.

If you have a fishing expert with you, all the right equipment and the time and weather is right then, that F*****! fish should take bite!:devilish:

I dont think you should be able to patent, basically all motion sensing controllers.

That's BS. MS and Sony shouldn't be allowed to directly copy, but the basic idea should not be patantable.

If XB360 hasn't made an impact by then, won't it be dead in Japan? We've got these great titles, and if they still don't get anyone buying XB360, will the titles still appear? Perhaps, for the international market, but I doubt XB360 could secure a strong Japanese lineup to keep people interested if they haven't got a large install base over there. And remember it's not 1 or 2 AAA titles that sell the console - it's all the little games too. XB360 needs to get enough of an install base that companies will create Mahjong and Pachinko for it (or whatever else they play).

Ha ha ha! Great argument. Even if Wii wins, MS and Sony will steal their ideas and they may not be able to afford to protect their IP.

1) Stealing patented ideas is pretty tricky, especially between big companies. What you count as Sony stealing Immersions tech I think most people count as Immersion getting an obvious patent that no-one design rumble in controllers thought they'd be infringing so didn't care to check, and Sony weren't going to give in without a fight after it was revealed either. Also Sony already has patents for using wands and other motion devices for input, so even if they do get accused of stealing Nintendo's idea down the line by Sony-haters, they may well be using techniques to do that without using Nintendos method (and Nintendo's method strikes me as not ideal. I wonder if they were finding a way around someone else's patent?)

2) Nintendo have buckets of cash. Do you think any crazy litigation is going to cost the a few billion in lawyers fees?

But this is all off topic. Ignoring anything that may be happneing years later, this TGS, if MS get overshadowed by some other exhibitor(s), even with great games they may not get the message across successfully.

My post has been updated. As of now it should include all scheduled X360 titles. From Hudson Soft downward is everything new. Other changes include: Dead Rising added to Capcom. Blue Dragon status changed from undecided to playable.

Shots from Sony's booth

Really not sure where to put this, but Gamespot seems to have nabbed some spy-photos from TGS, including what looks to be the PS3 retail box:

Looking good.

If some kind soul is going to be at TGS, would greatly appreciate it if you can cover/uncover:
* Any heat issues
* Any (How many) PS3 downtime during TGS ?
* How well (or not well) backward compatibility work
* Noise level while playing games (This is probably the most difficult)
* Blu-ray playback

The rest are all game play
Mr. Wibble needs bribe but I ain't got anything :(

OMIGOD!!! They're not using gloves when handling the PS3 units!!!
They're ruining them with their filthy little fingers!!!

I understand they have to wash for 5 minutes with ethanol to remove all water, and then 5 minutes with neat sulphuric acid to remove all oils, before allowed to touch the PS3's bare handed.

Or they have a cloth and can of Mr. Sheen...

I wonder if we'll see anything from the next:

- Socom
- Silent Hill
- Twisted Metal (if they are making one. . . any info at all?)

Maybe we'll know in a couple of hours!:)
