The G92 Architecture Rumours & Speculation Thread

Nvidia may have just fumbled. If the 8800GT is a 64sp part at $229, it's going to have a really hard time with "Revival" which is exactly like R600 on a 256bit bus.

The "New" GTS is one akward SKU for sure. Still 90nm only means that it's going to be around $350 to $400 fighitng the $300 55nm "Gladiator" which is also faster than R600. Talk about a major margin avantage here too(55nm > 90nm --- 256bit > 320bit --- 512mb > 640mb).
That's why i'm quite sceptical about no new hi-end from NV till G100. I think we'll see G80 shrink (or something even more powerful) in 1Q08.

Arithmetical power should be the key to beat RV670, tex/pix/z fil-rate have 4C/RPs @600MHz more than enough...

Let's think here... They rushed the launch to late october and are lowering the price down to $229 from $250. Correct? Sounds like the key for the 8800GT is, must be lower than "Revival" and must be first to the market.

What does that have to do with anything? Becasuse things seem to be pointing at ATi winning out this round, that your sceptical? :p
ATi also seems to be bringing something out in Q1 as well. I just hope it's something more than that crap Gemini where only one or two AIB's jump on it with extreamly low volume.

While I partially agree with many of the above points, this is certainly the one I disagree with the most...
And that kinda removes any sense from the 6-8 TCPs rumours.
No, the only thing it proves is that the difference between 256MiB and 512MiB in terms of cost is less than $30. Shock, horror! Like anyone with related knowledge would seriously believe it was more than that anyway...

Anyway, I do agree with one thing: based on my speculated specs, the 8800 GT should be competitive with the new GTS: 10% less bandwidth, 4% less ROP power, but 3% more texturing power and 10%+ more GFlops (possibly even a fair bit more if the arch was tweaked too). And presumably small arch tweaks should make things faster, not slower...

However, there always is the possibility NVIDIA will rename the 8800 GT to something else. Or that their naming scheme is complete bullshit. Or that the 8800 GT has a limitation we aren't thinking of, hmm. Or, of course, that it's a complete fuckup, or that it's not really 289mm2.

Against AMD's new chip, nV doesn't really need to rush anything. Moving up two weeks, would help them, just as the last few launchs, get their chips out first.

AMD is still going to have a though time this round. The 8800gt at 600 mhz is going to be a pretty good performer. The rv670 isn't quite up to the 8800gts 640, it performs well against 8800gts 320 in only a few games, until you turn on AA, the 8800 gt should be able to get performance of the 8800 gts's or close to them in most situations.

I didnt know that performance of rv670 were tested already.
I also wonder how faster version of R600 slower than 8800GTS ;)

You heard him talk about AA, right ?
And you also know how wide RV670's memory bus is, right ?
Also, did he mentioned which "8800 GTS" (old with 96 sp's, or "new" with 112 sp's) he was talking about ?

Shouldn't be too hard to guess where i'm going with this. ;)

So what exactly are you saying?

If the 8800GT clocks its SPs at around 1.8GHz, it will act as a good replacement for the old 8800GTS, explaining why it might interfere with their sales, and completely obsolete the 320MB version.

Lowering the price slightly and moving the launch up might not mean anything. It will still cost close to the HD 2950 Pro, going by current rumors.

The new 8800GTS will keep the part relevant, hold the price point (349-400), and compete with whatever future parts (2950XT?) AMD might release. It might push also AMD to release the XT sooner.

I want something faster. My GTX owes me nothing, but it has been almost a year and it's still pretty much the fastest... I guess that's kind of a good thing from one point of view, but I'm used to at leasting *wanting* to upgrade video cards every year! ;)

It certainly makes the most sense for NVIDIA to conquer the midrange, considering how pitiful it currently is (from AMD too). Still, it'd be nice if there was a new top dog as well... where's my 1TFlop performance?? :)

Word has it that getting the 8800 GT's core 600MHz up to 700MHz is "extremely easy". ;)

What does ;) this mean? Are you saying that you have a inside source? Or are you saying that you read this from a site and just not posting the link out of spite?

I'm sorry but NonNative, consider this a public warning: please stop adding nothing but noise! :|

Looks like this time NV was caught unprepared, just like ATi was when G80 showed up. :D

Who else could guess that an RVxxx part would be just a die shrink of the high-end mammoth [R600], minus the uber wide interface (plus UVD and check-boxed DX10.1). A kind of Trojan horse. ;)

Sorry but I was so happy that RV670 can make almost same performance as ultra. I mean I never expected anything like this to come out.

Do you seriously believe in this?
