TES V: Skyrim

I re downloaded from steam, and now it's working fine!
Loving it so far!
How can I enable ssao for nvidia cards?
Do I have to use something outside of NVs control panel?

Great to hear! I'm gonna pause for a bit, as I'm planning to go out and buy a new screen on monday for my PC; a 27" widescreen Super PLS panel Samsung unit, that I have placed a reservation on yesterday. Gotta travel clear across town, but it'll be worth it! Can't game properly on my current POS monitor, it kills all the fun and enjoyment out of great graphics and amazing vistas. Looking forward to continuing with Rage too with the new screen...

Well, talking to a friend of mine who has the game and like some have said here, it doesn't appear to have the horrid enemy level system of Oblivion and to a lesser extent Fallout 3. So that's a big plus and I'm tempted to get this after talking to him.

Unfortunately, he uses the RDFG settings for movement like I do and that's where things go south.

Apparently he is able to use his reconfigured key (I think he's using X) to drop items in world. But he is unable to use that key to put items into chests or plant items on people. I guess that function is hardcoded to the R key? Bleh. And right when I was considering the game, there they go and do something stupid that makes the entire thing a non-starter. Hopefully there's a patch for this in the future.

Regards,
SB

I read on GAF that forcing SSAO looks nice, but isn't worth the performance hit.

So far running pretty well on my system:

i7 2600K @3.4GHz
16GB DDR3
GTX465 1GB

1680x1050, 8x AF, 4x AA, no FXAA, everything else at Ultra, with .ini tweaks and V-sync off. The framerate fluctuates wildly at times depending on what's on-screen, but never dips below 30fps, and usually hangs in the mid 40s, sometimes jumping up to 60fps if there's not much going on. My weak point's my GPU, but I'm still doing a damn sight better than playing it on Xbox.

I'm not very far into it (still in Riverwood), since I'm working this weekend, but I hope to get more time to play later today and tomorrow.

Yeah, key bindings (ie hardcoded keys) is another obvious miss that shouldn't have happened. I happened across my fourth bandit fort this morning, and I'm convinced that bandits still need a lot of work. The ones in forts will give you a warning "Don't come any closer" or "That's far enough", but they can see you through the fort walls which is dumb.

At least they don't come immediately storming out, like they did in Oblivion. And it's not like I was going to avoid them anyway; if they're warning me, it's because I've already decided to come steal their shit :)

Thievery had two major differences in oblivion - way easier and it wasn't the first time! So what i meant was really that skyrim seems to suffer the same issues. Thieving is easy once you understand the system, save anywhere makes it easy to game the system, and there's just not much good they can do about it. It'll never recapture the magic of thieving for the first time in MW, in 3d, with such realistic reactions fron the npcs, with learning you could take so many approaches (climbing, hiding, magic, etc) to trick the npcs, etc. But that doesnt really make thieving in skyrim a total fail. Somewhere out there a final fantasy junkie is like O_O y-y-you man i can steal... anything... anywhere..!?!? If I'm careful and creative and take the right skills!? ...and imho that means Bsoft still has the magic (and is utterly without competition).

I'm not sure how much easier it actually ended up being. Once you know where the Amulet of Shadows is, almost any character in Morrowind instantly becomes a master thief. So my guess is that it's more about having figured out the mechanics making it seem easier in Oblivion than anything else. And while you can make your own invisibility suit in Oblivion, it typically takes quite a bit of time and dedication to do it.

Anyway, in about a week I'll most definitely have to check out thieving (without pots) in Skyrim :) The Thieves' Guild quest was by far my favorite major quest line in Oblivion (with the Dark Brotherhood coming in with a close second), so I have high hopes for that quest line in Skyrim (I'm assuming there still will be guild quest lines...).

The supersampling probably isn't going to be even close to perfect (IE, way less than say, 32 sub-samples/pixel...), so it could probably use some help from another, cheaper, algorithm. :)

Being on top of High Hrothgar at night with a full moon and the borealis in full effect was easily one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever observed in over 30 years of electronic gaming. For all the Gamebryo derived flaws, there are times when the game is just flat-out beautiful.

I turned FXAA off with SSAA. I didnt think FXAA added much and it will wipe out more texture detail. 4x SSAA looks fantastic as it is.

Yeah the game sure does look great at times.

I don't have enough grunt for 4xSSAA on my 5850; the framerate becomes choppy in heavier fights and/or big, busy scenes. So I'm stuck with a bit of less texture detail, but it solves the shader aliasing with a bit of over-exaggerated texture filtering. An acceptable tradeoff with my older-ish hardware.

At least, it is for me :) I am way out on the west edge of the map, and the views are phenomenal. Can't wait to get further north and check out the auroras.
