Super Mario Galaxy trailer and pics!

Why would you want that? A game is made with a certain idea and style behind it and that will probably work best for the game. Mario Galaxy with a killzone brownish look will probably benefit the game as much as killzone with a mario color pallet.

Well obviously because the gameplay appeals to me much more than the style, and that goes 10x for the main character. It's not like there are no games whatsoever out there that at least allow you to change the look of your main character, or even choose between a few different ones, especially in the platformer genre.

Anyway, I'm probably the only one who feels this way about Mario, so I'll shut up about it. I'm just giving you the biggest objection I have against Mario games. I can often see what is appealing about the gameplay, but often I really can't stand the aesthetics. I do like some of the graphics in Galaxies, but the enemies and the main character have almost always in almost all games really, really not clicked with me.

And so here you found me wishing that the gameplay of Mario would come in a new package / skin.

The amount of effects they show off is incredible. Those clear orb like planets cause a reflection and refraction as he walks around. The physics of the gravity could be interesting. There's environment bump mapping on many of the surfaces. If you watch carefully in the part where there are a ton of crystals around, you can see Mario being reflected in every facets of the crystals. I think I might have saw some self shadows under Mario's arm when he got the star at the end of the video. It went by real quick so I could be wrong.

My goodness, was that monstrosity a level? Sheeesh. The gameplay is breath-taking. It seems they have expanded on my favorite segment of Sunshine - the "secret" levels - while implementing gravity as a co-player. What I hadn't seen before DeadlyNinja's trailer posting was the extent to which the Wii-mote plays in changing gravitational pull. That is some amazing usage and had caught me offguard. I can't wait to hear a bit more about this game and if Wii-willing I will purchase it within days of launch. Wow very acid-trippy:cool:

So what's the technical analysis of this game? Nintendo using the hardware well? I heard somewhere that they they have gone to using some better form of shading(dropping goroud shading?) and the game has better lighting than previous Mario games. That's what I heard at least

Well it looks like it's helped by the very simple space environments. Bunches of geometric blocks against a space backdrop doesn't seem like an intense computational task. It reminds me a lot of casino animated slots lol. The sounds and visual look.

It certainly looks very smooth-running. Very clean look to the game.

It would have been a nice touch to be able to get the same gameplay with different style graphics. But that's far too much work these days anyway.

These days? About the only game I can think of that ever did something like this is Turok 2, with its Frootystripes, Sketch, and Gouraud cheats. I've never played a game that had multiple thematically different texture sets for the levels, though. Are there certain games you have in mind?

The game looks good. The water effect is nice, the draw distance is enormous, there's EMBM all over the place, and they're using enough polygons on the planetoids to give them a nice rounded look. What else is there to say? It needs more brown.
