This sounds like the 3DS all over again, no one wanted to buy it until there were games they wanted to play. And this generation, they get to play the "Nintendo games in HD" card, which is far stronger than you might think it would be (especially since they've been depriving us since 2006).

Though I'd say that the 3DS at $250 was really trying to pull a fast one on us, especially since the Vita launched at the same price, the Wii U at $300 is fine. It just needs games. Lots of games. Games we want to play. Because what really hurt it in the US was a bunch of ported games we could have played 6 months ago.

Wii success was due to it being a ...disruptive force out of no-where
Wii U touch screen is a follower ...just as 3DS "3D"...both are inferior tech to what consumers are already having...(high ppi, high contrast, multi-touch)
I thought Iwata made a big mistake to continue "following" the trend...3DS was a warning that he could have..should have heeded...Wii U should have continued with the Wii motion controlling package.....not a tablet controller...

So I don't think Nintendo will survive..Wii U successor wont matter...for real now. The tablet/mobile computing storm is big...and even 1000 pound gorilla like MS is feeling the heat.

Oh, I think that when it comes to console gaming (in the traditional sense), Nintendo may well be the last man standing, with the others dropping out or moving sideways away. This is Nintendos financial foundation, and they will do anything in their power to remain profitable in this niche. Sony, Microsoft, or for that matter Valve have other business areas that may offer better ROI, and have no particular reason to weather harsh conditions in a market niche that promises no growth. That said, I agree that going from motion controls to a more complex traditional controller was a disastrous decision, and that it will cost them. Already has.
