why, you might be able to view the original anyways.
I know that, for instance, the latest Terminator 2 DVD to come out is "special Edition" only, unless you do a few things in the menu. Then you can watch the original theatrical release.
Its pretty cool. I Wouldnt give up yet.

This is what really irks me about this release. DVD has a capability called seamless branching that allows for multiple versions of the same movie on one DVD. The best example of this could be the Infinifilm DVDs that add in deleted scenes as you watch the movie. The special editions were primarily cleaned up transfers (which I have no problem with) and added or edited scenes. It should be no problem for the producers of the DVD to allow seamless branching so that you can play either version. This is the best compromise imho as it satisfies everyone and requires little extra effort on top of the already hectic production process.

It some kind of new Special Edition with more extra bits added in according to the link I posted.

Well it has been confirmed...it is only the special editions. :( While I would like both versions on one disc I will still be buying the set. I'm sorry...but my crappy old VHS set or a new DVD set...not a real tough choice...especially considering that the VHS tapes are in full screen. Either way the bulk of the originals is still there. Anyone have a link to a site that details the changes between the two versions? It has been a while since I watched them and I can't recall anything other than the new scenes. Also...and I know you guys are going to hate this...I have heard some rumors of Lucas shooting new scenes for this release. I am praying that that rumor is false (and it seems to be as of right now)...cause you just can't replace the old actors with new ones this far after the original release.

[rant]I think the worst change to stick out in my mind on the SE's was the changing of one of the opening scenes in Return of the Jedi. They took out the original music and puppet singer from the bar scene, (which fit the mood of it perfectly, IMO), and inserted some jazzy, poppy crap with a CG singer. Also wasn't a fan of the walking Jabba scene.

And if they do reshoot scenes, I wouldn't be surprised to see Lucas try and CG the actors. Goddamn arrogant prick, you don't mess with perfection![/rant]
