Square-Enix results, plans for the year, on PSP/DS/XNA

Keep in mind there was this nice little thing called a "merger" that caused a lot of delays and shuffling of priorities and resources (including completely relocating an entire studio)...

Yeah, but I don´t think it´s fair for the gaming population to delay such an anticipated game (that must be pretty much done by now) almost an entire year just to boost their bottomline...or was SE lying about the game´s release?

Um... Not sure if I missed anything, but how does this officially differ from any other game-delaying situation? Did they state "we're going to delay FFXII to spread out our releases" or did they--like oh-so-many other games we know of--list an expected release time and then at some point move it up?

I pretty much expect that at ALL times with the bigger titles. Whether computer or console... we've been pretty-well covered evenly by the delays. ;)

Well, such big delays only plague Xbox right now, they´re pretty much gone on PS2 and GCN. I just find it strange, since the game when announced seemed to be doing well and en-route for a release this summer, and suddenly, poof! the game is a buggy, unplayable mess that needs to be delayed one whole year.

I really would like to know what´s the reason behind such a move.

It's pretty obvious they did it to spread out their earnings. Who wouldn't? I also don't understand why're you're getting so upset over this. These games have MASSIVE budgets, and their success is critical to the overall health of Squenix. Releasing the games (once they're fit to be released) for the sake of the fans does not a sound business strategy make.

With next gen hardware the delays are going to get worse than they are now and the budgets are also going to rise.

Expect to see alot of delays the first few years of the next gen for all systems (except mabye ns5 )

Well it doesn't have to be "buggy or unplayable"--it could just be somewhat behind schedule, or have a schedule updated because of wanting to add more. FF's have always been able to toss in "more stuff," and they could have certainly taken other opportunities to pump up FFXII if they wanted. Since they switched engines as well, there could have been unforseen problems to take care of, or hell--unforseen enhancements they'd want to stick in. <shrugs>

Also, just for reference, one of the games I WAS thinking of from "console delays" was Gran Turismo 4. ;)

It's all happening again...

- PlayStation was released in Europe autumn 1995
- I bought a lot of PS games until 1998, when I bought me a PC and N64.
- GT2 was released in 1999, I never bought it (my PC and N64 ate all my money).
- Metal Gear Solid was released for Playstation in 1999, I never bought it.
- My well-served PlayStation broke during 1999-2000
- Final Fantasy IX was released in Europe spring 2001

PS2 was released in Europe at November 2000. I bought FFIX after I'd bought PS2.

My chrystal ball tells me:

- I bought a PC in 2004, it's eating some of my money and gaming time, and I don't play as many PS2 games as before.
- GT4 will be released for PS2 in summer 2004, I'll propably buy it, PS2 games are not looking as dated as PSOne games did.
- MGS3 will be released at the end of 2004, I'll propably buy it.
- PS3 will be released in Europe at the end of year 2005.
- My PS2 is still working perfectly, though I expect it to give up after 5 years of hard service.
- Final Fantasy XII will be released in Europe spring 2006, I'll play it in the backwards compatible PS3.

- I'll by a new PC in 2010 with IBM Cell128 7GHz, with 3DLabs Xaggerelator 6969 graphics card
- GT 6 will be released for PS3 in summer 2010
- MGS5 will be released at the end of 2010
- PS4 will be released in FEUK (Former European Union Kutaragia) 2015.
- FFXV will be released in FEUK spring 2016, Sony'll feed it directly into my brain via PlayStation4, with sublimal messages that tell me to obey Emperor Kutaragi and buy only Sony products. Every home has an Aibo robot dog, that monitors our lives and sends the data to Sony Home Security Central.

Like JVD said, hjopefully they'll raise the level of production with the new schedule. Not like i was complaining about anything, but more quality is always welcome. KH2 is my most wanted and will be until it comes out.

Hey, I am totally capable of understanding this, but I think I haven´t explained myself enough. FFXII was supposed to be out this year, to be the big game to boost this year´s bottomline. The merger came, and all plans apparently were suddenly not suitable for the company anymore it seems. Now they just don´t know what to do.

They don´t have a big game for Japan this year anymore, in NA they´re hoping SO3 will do the trick (a game which IMO has no chance of going past 300k units) and that´s not going to be enough. DQVIII is aparently on track too, conflicting with FFXII in terms of release date, and now it seems neither of those games are going to see a release this year and pretty much all of the next one it seems, and to spice things up even more, KH2 is coming and they also have no clue what to do with that one.

SE just doesn´t know how to be a big company IMO. Enix was fine on its own, because they pretty much only had DQ, and a much smaller brother in SO, and Square only had FF and KH a a bunch of much less popular titles. However, now they don´t seem like they even know what they´re doing.

I´m a pretty big SE fan, but that does not mean that I´m just going to jump and shout with joy over the prospect of waiting a year and a half for FFXII instead of just 6 months.

Been reading through the latest Dengeki PS2, and I think we can make a pretty safe bet that we will see FF12 this year if they can finish it - at least the importers will. To date, a lot of details have been revealed. We already know all 6 of the playable characters. We also know quite a bit about the backgroud story, including including one of the PCs performing regicide.

There are also some details that I don't see covered by any game site - apologies if already advertised:

1) The 'Gambit' system seems pretty competent - so far. The report talks about how characters automatically use a healing item when HP drops below a selected level.

2) There is a "Wait Time Guage"(WTG) for each character. A character needs the WTG to be filled to perform an action. Still not clear if "stocking up" WTG can lead to bigger attacks/special commands or some such. Or is it identical in function to the ATB of previous FFs?

3) Enemies are more intelligent. They will flee if badly injured or may call for reinforcements.

4) Focusing only on the main scenario will take 30-40 hours. Including all sub scenarios and and character-building quests may take 100-150 hours.

5) Official from the producer himself - release date is now between Winter and Spring. The game is pegged at "80% complete".(OK, I could have messed up the 80% part in my translation.)
